What Else Do You Collect Besides Knives?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Isn't it wonderful.......collecting, hoarding, accumulating, acquiring, etc.,.......If nobody did this, family histories would disappear, legacies would be lost, our past would just be guesswork to future generations. I should start a separate topic on what is the oldest item that you have, but some other time. I just think it's fantastic to not only pass down written documentation for future generations, but to back it up with actual pieces of our history. Thanks to everybody who has contributed thus far. Let's keep it going. If you're hesitant because you don't feel your item(s) are relevant, think again. Post what you have, share it with us.

I got bit early with the collecting bug. When I was little I was collecting things that I would put in my office some day. I collected small rubber horses and everything that once belonged to my Grandpa. I have my Dad's baby dish and his shaving mug, Mom's old Pig cutting board, toys I played with as a kid, and pretty much everything someone gave me as a gift. My office isn't near big enough, but it's full. I wrote an article years ago for Knife World about "Three Easy Lessons" on collecting with pictures of my office. It's a museum of my life and hard wired into me is a collector. I doubt professional help could change that even if I wanted to which I don't. ____Dave

As soon as I moved up here, my stress level dropped to almost nothing. I'm originally from a small town and this place fits me like a glove. To say that it's slow paced is putting it mildly. It's a shame that I had to live and work for 36 years in that melting pot of........., otherwise known as Los Angeles. But that is where my job was and good jobs were/are hard to find. Take care of yourself, Skip. ::handshake::

Teriffic story! I have a couple of my paternal grandfather's items, nothing from the other grandparents. I have alot of my father's stuff. I have a few of my mother's kitchen gadgets. I have some of my baby stuff. The toys I had as a child are long gone, donated to charity or just tossed out by my parents. I did manage to save my collection of Matchbox cars/vehicles and just recently, sold them all off. I do wish that I had those toys I grew up with, they are worth some money now. But I still have the memories associated with them.

Thank you Jerry. Yup, got transferred from N.Y. Telephone (had 4 years there) in October 1978 to Pacific Telephone. Pacific Telephone became Pacific Bell, which became SBC, which became AT&T and I retired in July 2014 with 40 years service. Then.....
I got the ::censored:: out of there. Just in time too, I was quickly losing my mind. :D

I sometimes think that maybe I should have gone to work for Ma Bell instead of NCR but my buddies that stuck with NCR came out okay.

I was lucky to have graduated high school when I did (1974). At that time, there was a nice selection of jobs with good companies available. I could've gone with IBM, the local police dept. was hiring, the fire dept. was hiring, West Point Military Academy was hiring for civilian jobs. But N.Y. Telephone was willing to hire me when I was 17. Not too bad being able to retire when you're 57. I was going to go to college to study to become a geologist but I was not the school type. I wanted a job and I went and got one. I don't regret my choice at all.

When I got out of the Marine Corps in September of 1966, if you were breathing you could get a job. My intention was to apply for unemployment and sit on my rear end for six months. I went down to sign up and (I guess fortunately for me) I went to the Job Service by mistake and they sent me down to NCR and they gave me an employment test for a Technicial Services Engineer position (Field Engineer fixer feller). I didn't hear anything back for a couple of days so I applied for a job at Rockford Clutch and went to work the next day. The job was engine lathe operator and I didn't like it so when NCR called a week later with a job offer, I jumped ship. National Cash Register was a good company to work for.

Well, I guess I collect some old tools, I have some old bottles from when I was younger. I have half a dozen wood machinist tool chests, so I guess that's a collection.

It is very interesting reading that you people have put up. America and Australia have much in common. Good employment opportunities were the norm also over here in the time frame that you talk of. Private companies were always on the look out for anyone who was willing to have a go, and nearly all the government and public sector departments offered clerical and apprenticeship positions. Jobs like mechanics, fitters and turners, electrical, machinists etc. etc. were all available, and back then were careers for life, with fantastic benefits. But when our Manufacturing industries started to close and go offshore and the public service stopped offering apprenticeships and traineeships that all came to an end, sadly. But it is good to be able to communicate with people from the other side of the world about how things are happening now, and in the past. To all of you, have a good weekend and stay safe. :)

I would've stayed with my company for X more years, but technology was moving ahead to fast and I just didn't have the patience to keep up with it. Also, a major factor in my decision to retire was that Los Angeles was/is a zoo and I couldn't take the traffic and the bull ::censored:: anymore. I'm an old school cable maintenance splicer. I didn't want to go back to school (ma bell school) to learn about fiber optic cable placement and repair. It's too late, in essence, to start all over again. I figured, let the new hires, the young guys do it and so I said goodbye to good old Mother Bell. Take care mate. ::tu::

Very nice collection of hats bighomer! ::tu:: Those pins from the American Legion and Lions Club were my father's. He never wore a "baseball" style hat. He would wear maybe one or two at a time on his jacket lapel or use one as a tie pin, and only if he was going to a meeting or some other function involving those groups. The pins that belonged to me (posted on page 6), yes, I wore them on my many, many, "baseball" style hats.

cigar box openers, used in drug stores and tobacco shops to cut the paper, pull the nail and tap it back down, along with a few bar tools. I don't know what that ugly knife is doing in there with my other stuff. ____Dave

Hi Dave. Great collection of tobacco and bar related items. Looking at them I realized I had seen one of those items before. I went and got a box of my father's stuff out of my closet and found it. I isolated the item in your picture and enlarged it slightly. It's in the center of the picture. My father's item is the last 2 pictures. Although not identical, it is similar enough to yours. I'm pretty sure that it was my grandfather's and that my father saved it. I've had it for about 37 years and had no idea what it was, until now. It measures approx. 3 3/4" long X 1 5/8" wide at the widest part. It appears to be made of cast iron(?) It is magnetic. I can't find any maker marks or stamps. Thank you for shedding some light on this item. Regards, Skip. ::tu:: ::handshake::
