That's pretty cool and something you don't find or see very often.

About $4.50 - $5.00 in today's money. Not as many taxes then and companies were not quite as greedy as they are today.

59¢ was the retail price, the knife company sold it to the retailer for probably 39¢

If 59¢ is about $5.00 today, you still could not produce the razors, pocket knife and packaging and make a profit ::huff::

You could when you paid your workers a pittance of a wage. It's part of what killed Sheffield too. Once they had to pay a real living wage to their workers they couldn't compete with China.

Found this compass by Imperial Knife, from the Imperial Schrade era.

I've been searching for the one that they included with the DE camp knife
in the blister pack, but no luck - over 2 years and counting ::shrug::
It doesn't have a cover and the lens is green.
(geez, can't even find my picture of it now ::facepalm:: )

Here is a Schrade 902OT, the only non-knife item I am aware of that received an OT number.
The 902OT was listed in the Schrade catalogs from 1988 to 1990.

I also have the Imperial compass as well.........somewhere. ::facepalm::

Here's something a bit unusual:this was in the old machinist's tool box that was given to me the other day. There are lots of Allen wrenches;regular wrenches;some machinists' stuff;and then there was this.
A bone handled brush! At first I thought it was plastic until I started cleaning it up and noticed the Haversian canals in the handle. On the bottom there is engraved the word,"REMINGTON" and I thought that it might be for cleaning guns. Then I flipped it over and engraved in the handle were the words,"USED FOR TYPE ONLY". Apparently it is for cleaning the letters on an old typewriter(made by Remington-Rand).
Well it cleaned up rather nicely and will go into my collection of ephemera.

Sometime in the late 1950's, Robeson began using a wooden handle on some of their pocketknife patterns. They used the product on their kitchen cutlery, as well.

They called it "Shur-Wood", in keeping with their long standing "ShurEdge" logo.

They built a separate facility to make the material, as it was a multi-layered, compressed wood and phenolic resin composition.

Sellers on Ebay frequently describe it as, "Rosewood". I have no idea which wood they actually used in making it.

They used it to make cases or plaques to hold various sets of kitchen knives, steak knives, etc. They used it to make pocketknife display cases.

I once had the opportunity to purchase a box of tweny-four unused, tissue wrapped black & white multi-layer Shur-Wood handled steak knives that were etched, "Union Pacific" on the blades. I should have bought those. I could have sold them, one at a time, to railroad collectors.

A year or so ago, I bought the ShurWood and gold plated BEER BARON can and bottle opener shown below off Ebay for 99 cents. It's twelve or thirteen inches long and barely fit on my scanner plate. The box didn't fit. I guess it was meant to be a bar tool.

As you can see, the paper label mentions a subsidiary company of Robeson Cutlery called, "Shur-Wood Designs".

Yesterday, I searched Ebay using Shur-Wood as a keyword for the first time ever. I don't know why it had never occurred to me before.

All three of these Robeson Shur-Wood ash trays are currently on auction on Ebay. Buy-It-Now prices are in the mid to upper $20's.

Interesting. I suppose Robeson was attempting to survive financially by branching out into other endeavors. They also produced small kitchen appliances like electric can openers, popcorn poppers, hot dog cookers (they work great!), kerosene heaters, etc.

And, No, I'm not buying any of these ash trays. They are quite attractive, though, in a modern design sense.
