Great photos of a beautiful time of the year. And i have to ask, the knife in your Avatar, what make and how old is it, i reckon it is such a beautiful knife.

I have to admit, it is not mine. One late night, last week, I decided to change my avatar, but took the easy way out and downloaded an image. I just didn't feel like getting out of the recliner and going and selecting a knife to photo.
I can't answer your question as to make, I was just looking for a pic of a nice old ebony jack and no name was given.

I just got this tattoo this morning--- my brothers initials, my cousins initials, my dad's initials and my maternal grandfather's army nick name... they're always with me in spirit, I just wanted this for a long time...I think it came out really nice...

Went to a friend's farm auction today. Good turn out. Lots of farmers wanting to buy more land. The purely farm land was going for around 7k an acre in 10 acre lots. 100 acres were offered. The lots with house, barns, sheds etc went for more. I found it interesting. My first farm auction. I didn't stay to the end but I think my friend realized a little shy of 2 million,

Nice pictures and good for your friend,! I used to absolutely love going to any kind of auction with my mom and dad when I was a kid and my whole life! There used to be an auction every night around here somewhere...dad always bought the boxes of junk for a buck that no one else wanted..we found a lot of gems in those boxes!

Thanks for the auction pictures. For me, farm auctions are bittersweet. I enjoy seeing what folks have to sell and looking for things I might need, but mostly just like the camaraderie, visiting with other folks. Glad your friend got the money but hate to see our country’s farms being split into mostly non-ag usage. Those 10 acre plots are what folks fleeing the cities want, but they won’t be productive as farms. When I’m out working my place people driving around in their little sedans and SUVs stop and ask “do you know where we can buy 5 or 10 acres?” All the big pieces of land around here that have sold in the last 20 years or so have been bought by developers.

I agree with the bittersweet Ken. Most small family farms that are left around here hire the planting and combining done. We could no longer justify maintenance cost on our old combine and it takes alot of acres to buy a $200000 plus machine. We are all becoming more specialized. I run a my pack tractor with one of the custom silage cutting crews then switch to liquid manure hauling. We pump and apply around 10 million gallons a year. We have another feedlot/partner plant and combine for us. Allows us all to keep up with technology we need to produce at today's levels. But I would go back to the family farm and Grandma bringing us lunch in the field in a heartbeat if I could. One of my favorite things when I was little was going to auctions with my grandpa.

And that's great. Around here, we've got a problem with real estate developers buying all the old family farms to build housing developments. And this happens all over the country. Other areas in the US, it's the Chinese.

There was a big uproar when my county tried to do zoning, which basically would have made it easier for the developers, given most areas would have been zoned residential, and we couldn't have done any farming given the dozens of pages of rules and regulations that came with it, when there's still quite a few small family farms around here. And guess what--the Supervisor pushing it was a lawyer, and his biggest client were the developers. He's a Democrat (actually, the only one), but that's not the issue. He's been criticized for several corrupt deals and bad ideas that cost millions, but few know about it. He almost lost to a gentleman who runs a local center for disadvantaged children. Then, to keep the guy running from him again (the guy did owe a bit in taxes), he passed a law saying anyone running for office had to publish their taxes.

That's awesome to hear Gary, but I sure don't want to be his pocket book right now! It's bad enough trying to buy a sprayer for round 20-40 grand, let alone a whole farm .

Much like you guys Bill, I'm getting the itch to change up some of are operation. I'm thinking of putting down a hay blend with my oats 2 years from now, have to seed canola on that quarter next year (because of barley this season, and that i'm rebuilding myself after a short stint away.
Ranchers right across western canada are always in need of hay, even in good years, especially in bad ones. These last 3 years have been especially tough out west of us. We're all in a pretty dry cycle up hear, places really really bad, us, not so much. We'll see what next year brings, which, as you all know, is all you can do .

Oh, and is that an 9280 yer running Bill? Looks like it from the angles.

Yes sir! Rebuilt the transmission last year after seeing what even a used 10 year old 400 hp tractor was going to cost me. Put new rubber on and all LED lights and new interior this year. Plan on interior in the 9350 my son runs this winter.

I found these two pictures while looking for something else. They made the front page of the local Newburgh, N.Y. newspaper. I completely forgot I had them. They are from January 1976 and I was 19 years old at the time. This accident occurred on route 32 (2 lane highway), just south of Union Avenue in New Windsor (almost in the center of the map). A few of you might know where this is. Two vehicles, two occupants and two deaths. I don't remember the details exactly, but I believe the Volkswagen was traveling south and the other vehicle was traveling north. If the pictures were side by side, the Volkswagen would be on the left. The northbound vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane and boom, that's all she wrote. It took us quite some time to get the bodies out of each vehicle using the "jaws of life." I'm in the bottom picture, far right, the middle fireman (holding the broom parts).

Skip, once upon a time,in my childhood, I thought of becoming a State Trooper. Eventually, I realized I would frequently be dealing with scenes such as in your photos. Exit my thought.

My "career" as a firefighter (volunteer) ended in October of 1978 when I got transferred with my job from New York to Los Angeles. I never thought of becoming a law enforcement officer, it just wasn't me.

The game commission released a bunch of farm raised ringnecks the last few weeks for small game season... I live close to a huge game lands and every year the same thing---You can pretty much walk up to them and blow their head off with a shotgun if you want... That's not what I call hunting...

Traveling home through Indiana I found a sign or village wide garage sales. 1903 Indianapolis racer from Illinois and no other info about it. Mine is the white car ahead of the antique Ford.

A very good friend of mine was killed when we were 18 years old. Where I grew-up, we have something called "Tule Fog" - it is some of the worst, most dense fog in the country. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tule_fog

He drove a VW Beetle, and early one Fall morning he was on his way to the local Junior College that we both attended, and on the same country road we both took to get there. He drove directly into the back of a tractor pulling a large plow. The front of his Beetle was shredded and he died instantly.

He was a great guy - I think about him every time I see a foggy day.
