Marlin .35. .My first and only deer rifle .perfect gun for hunting in the woods from a stand in a white oak tree .been tagging my limit with the same gun out if the same tree for 40 years now .took all summer hauling hay and mowing yards to pay for her .

That’s a nice stub nose .what kind of recoil die it have when fired ? I had a Dan Wesson in the .357. With a 10 inch barrel length. The recoil was manageable but still required a firm two handed grip .

believe it or not that’s a huge contributing factor to success with a weapon. I worked in a gun shop and countless times I would start a sales transaction with “what looks good to your eye”. My youngest son is a golf pro and the same occurs with buying golf clubs. We humans are kinda funny aren’t we?

I carry Hornaday. 38 special self defense loads on it and find it very manageable. The .357 loads are hot but bearable.

I bought this little gun for my wife back “1984” from a “fireman “ at the local gun show in Mt.Home Arkansas. At the time I was doing a lot coon hunting and my wife did not feel safe with me out all hours of the night following the hounds .The 12 gauge mossberg pump loaded with O O . Buckshot for home defense was too much gun for her to manage .The light frame and .380 caliber was a perfect match for her .After a few trips to the firing range and a couple boxes of shells se became confident that she could stay at home alone and stop any threat if someone was to kick the door in while I was gone pursuing my night sport .The gun also came in an Angel Blue color that she found attractive .

I was caring my 45 S.W. Revolver for self defense bit is heavy to tote around .we don’t have much crime in my area so I keep it in the gun safe at my bothers house now days .when we go to the city the wife’s .380 goes along .I have been thinking about getting this gun to pair with it as we do have a lot of copperheads and rattles in my area and it could come in just as handy as a garden hoe or Rock .

The pretty colored guns have driven a lot of sales to women. I will always remember one time, a gentleman came in my pawnshop sort of looking for a handgun for his wife for self defense at home when he was gone. I suggested a 38 spl revolver and showed him a S&W and a Charter Arms. Then he said, "But the problem is she WANTS a purple gun!" and all he could find was the little Ruger LCP and she said it was too little(smart lady!) I made a quick lookup on my distributors website for what I thought was available, Yes, Charter Arms has them, .38 revolvers. He said his wife was in the car but had her foot in a cast so she didn't want to come in. I let him take the black & stainless one I had in stock and a picture of the purple one out to his car to show her. When he came back in he said "Order it!" A month or so later they stopped back and and she thanked me for making it happen.
Myself, I don't have any pretty colored handguns but my Ruger AR15 is Robin Egg Blue. Cuz it was $50 cheaper than the black.

For a couple of decades I’ve had my Rossi .38 Special loaded with Federal Hydra-Shok ammo for home defense.

When I recently bought my Ruger .38 Special I switched to Hornady Critical Defense loads but I still have a partial box of the Hydra-Shok that is 18-20 years old.

Can I still trust the 20 year old ammo? It doesn’t look corroded or damaged in any way.

Thomasg, I like the picture of your Marlin rifle and I like your story that goes with it! 40 years from the same tree.

That's a good long time with one rifle, I can't match that but can say that I hunted with a Remington 700 30-06 from 1969 for 30 years. In 1999 my wife and children bought me a 700 .243 and I have used it ever since, that's 25 years with this one. I had traded for a Remington 788 in .243 and my son used it to kill his 1st deer. I liked the recoil of the .243 better than the '06, now especially that I'm a getting older. Got 4 of my Florida limit of 5 this season with the .243 and one with the .50 cal. Knight muzzle loader.
It just feels good to have confidence in the weapon you take to the deer woods! There's a closet full of things to shoot with but it's kinda' like a box full of pocketknives, I still cling to the same EDCs even though I could carry a different one every day of the year.

I like to keep my ammo fresh but I've shot ammo older than that.

Anyone have some really old guns?? I have 2. A S&W M&P .38spl that dates to 1911. I put the new wood grips on but do have the original hard plastic ones. Shoots as good as new.

Grandson with it and a Winchester 22 pump from 1909. He was amazed that something that old still functioned perfectly

If we have any old guns it would this Long Tom. My wife says it was either her Grandpa's or her Great Grandpa's gun. We really have no idea of its age.

If Long Tom is the only marking on it, it would have been made by Crescent Arms between 1908 & 1916. They were sold by Sears and many hardware stores
Correcting myself, Stevens was also a mfg of them and not all were marked with the Stevens name,

Looks like you could reach out and touch 'em with that LONG TOM, Rick.

We've got a S&W "almost" like the one Miss Boji posted. All I need to do is put another set of grips on it.:

: I found this one in a lake in Central Florida back in the early '70s when I worked for a water pollution control agency.

Can do a bit better with the condition by showing another Winchester mfg. in 1911, an 1892 32-20 rifle. The serial number 59XXXX dates it as 1911.
I've thought several times about taking it to the deer stand and if ol' Bambi got close enough, I'd get to experience what the old timers felt in the day.

Thanks for the update. This is the only other marking on the entire gun. Would your quoted dates still be the same or does the possible Stevens manufacture complicate the dating?

Any research on the Long Tom is iffy at best. I think Stevens made them into the 1930's.

I’m a huge Marlin .35 Remington fan. My first deer rifle was a 1957 SC model, it’s still my baby.

Then a 1953 336RC .35 Rem waffle top with perch belly forearm came to my house. I loved it so much, that a couple months ago a 1951 336A .35 Rem (24” barrel, 3/4 length mag tube) also with an unmolested waffle top joined the stable. We won’t mention the 30-30s, 357, 22…. I guess you could say I have a Marlin lever action problem.

In my humble opinion, the .35 Rem just kills deer deader. lol
