It's beginning to look a lot more like spring on the Kenai River. Because of travel restrictions
in Canada my brother going to fly back now and go back when the restrictions are lifted and get
his car. The U.S. and Texas have already lifted the restrictions that were keeping him
from driving back right now.

I don't normally have anything to post in this thread but when I took the trash out this morning, I noticed the Irises are blooming. This is a testament to the hardiness of these flowers. In the 14 years I've lived here, they've been ignored, had garbage cans drug over them, gone through dry years, went through last year when we set a record of 31º below zero and more importantly were mowed over every year, yet here they are, just as beautiful as ever.

Jerry, I’m pretty sure those beauties are Iris, not Lilies. Either way, they’re obviously tough plants. There are a lot of old abandoned rural home sites around here where the house and everything else is gone but Iris, daffodils, roses, salvia, and Tiger Lilies have naturalized. There was a house at one time here on the east side of the ranch. It was long gone when I bought the place in 1975. I was mowing some overgrown weeds and vines with a bush hog shredder and found the old Bois d’Arc posts the house’s foundation beams were built on. Busted the shear pin on my shredder! To this day, every spring the daffodils that lined the walk there come up. The old roses are still there too.

You see a lot of them planted around the old grave yards. Because they require so little care I guess.

Thinking about that old home site that was here, after I discovered where the house had been I was making some inquiries about it, talking with some of the “old timers” around here to see what they knew. One of them was born in that house in 1926 and lived there until he was 16 when he lied about his age and enlisted in the Navy.

He came and showed me around where the house, smokehouse, privy, and hog pens had been. Some of the remains were still there at that time, just pieces of wood and tin. The old hand-dug well is still there to this day, and still has water in it. The well is about 3 feet in diameter and 30 feet deep. I pumped it dry once and you could hear the water running back into it from an underground spring. I have no idea how long it has been there but those old timers told me that during the big drought here in the 1950‘s it was one of the only wells that did not go dry, and people came there from miles away for water.

I agree Jerry. I can’t even imagine hand digging a well 3 ft in diameter and 30 ft deep. We're spoiled.

He hasn't updated me yet. I pretty sure they got most of it finished, in between shoveling snow for 5 or 6 months.
He sure has enough pictures of Alaska to write a travel book.

Well, you've heard that saying, "colder than a well diggers a**". Grandpa had a cistern and I can't even imagine digging that.

I've heard that Jerry especially the ones in Fargo North Dakota. These five little gals came by for a snack last evening about dark thirty. The one on the the left looks kinda fat could she be tote'n some babies. one is behind the bush if your counting.

That's a local lake. Great place to take kids, clean and plenty of fish. We were using a new bait, chopped up hotdogs, cherry kool aid powder, garlic powder & salt. Stinks to high heaven but catfish go nuts over it!
