Based on the peeling bark, that's what I thought too Charlie, but I don't believe we have any birch in FLA!

Nice fungus - I mean ... knives, Charlie. Good photos!

Knice shots there, Scott. Regarding the tree, it looks like River Birch to me. River Birch is a common tree along rivers here along my stretch of the Gulf Coast. It is also a common ornamental tree planted in subdivisions here.
Here is what the USDA says about the range in Florida.
