A West Michigan septarian nodule aka lightning stone. I dug this out of a farm pond dig pile. 4 1/4 inch. I wet ground the angled section as my focal point and sanded and wheel polished. This type is limited to a narrow stretch of Lake Michigan shore line. Clay that harden into siderite and the cracks filled in with calcite.

Great stuff! I have a few of those around the house along with other rocks from countless hours spent at the beach from when I lived in that area. We frequented a couple of fairly secluded beaches between St Joe/Benton Harbor and South Haven that were great for rocks. Thanks for your post.

Ancient Greece... The Greeks came to the Balkan Peninsula around 1500 BC. Here they find the already developed civilization of the Thracian-Pelasgians. Much of ancient Greek history is actually Thracian. The Trojan War was a war of Thracian city-states to control the straits. The Greeks (Danaans) are only an ally of one of the countries. Achilles is a Scythian expelled from Scythia. The Scythians, Sarmatians, Getae and Dacians are related Thracian tribes. In the "Chronography" of the Byzantine chronicler John Malala writes: "Achilles arrived with the Atreides and Samsi with his own army, once called Myrmidonyans, and now Bulgarians, 3,000 people." This information is also reflected in the Old Bulgarian translation of the Iliad, made during the reign of Tsar Simeon the Great at the Preslav Literary School.
The connection of the Myrmidons with the Bulgarians is also mentioned by John Tsetse, who writes: "And then they all came to Avlid by ship, and with them Achilles, the son of Peleus and Thetis, the daughter of the philosopher Chiron, leading an army of Huns-Bulgarians-Myrmidons numbering two thousand and five hundred."

I found this thing in the river. It is like a stone in weight and touch, but it looks like a bone. Could it be some kind of fossil?

Looks like a fossilized rib to me. No scale, but appears to be large enough to be from a large bovine, horse, etc.

Thanks, it is an amazing sight watching good working/stock dogs. My friends father is an excellent educator of working dogs, it is as though they can talk to one another. And he loves them to death.

I agree, watching dogs work is amazing. Those dogs look like maybe some mix of Queensland? I've usually seen mostly Australian Shephards for sheep, and Queensland's for cattle, but a good dog is a good dog, regardless of breeding.

I've never seen an Australian Shepherd work sheep, they are not a really popular breed and are bred for pets.

My son can put about 13 or 14 sheep in the back of his truck, then two more - then there is 11.
His Kelpie Sheep Dog, works out why my son can not get 15 seep in the truck.
Then the dog, puts another 560 sheep in the truck - with out any help from my son...

In Australia, we do not use Border Collies. We have our own sheep dogs, the "Australian Kelpie".

Border collies are used for sheep here in the southern states, the climate is more forgiving for them. But you are right about the Kelpie, they are used more or less exclusively for yard work, and the larger acreage properties. We have a Kelpie sale every year here at Casterton and they get big crowds. The well bred and or really well trained dogs can bring staggering amounts, $10,000 is not uncommon. They have a jumping competition where the dogs have to jump a perpendicular wall, that they keep increasing the height to eliminate the dog as they fail each increase in height. Fantastic viewing. They had a competition down here 2 years ago, they put GPS trackers on working Kelpies to see how much ground they covered over a working day, the average was 28 miles and the winner covered 43 miles, you have to remember they do this day in day out. A marathon runner overs 26 miles then takes days or weeks to recover. How are you going mate, hope you're well.

Despite the name, Australian Shepherd dogs are not from Australia. In fact I think it's maybe a breed developed in America. I have a friend whose wife breeds and raises them for sale. He raises sheep. The dogs are used to work sheep and cattle.

"The one day Vacation"

Due to Covid 19, my family & I have spent most of our free time at home this year. I guess you could say..., "They don't get out much." Last Saturday we finally got out & did a few things. It almost felt like being on vacation.

First off, we visited a local Flea Market. It's normally 30 - 40 stands and is held on the first saturday of the month from early spring through late fall, depending on the temperatures in spring & fall. This was the first one that they had this year due to Covid 19 and masks were required.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any pocket knives or Zippo's but I did "Pick Up" a few other things I thought I'd show.

Here's what I bought.:

1) 3 cork hot pads for 1-€
2) 3 tins for cigarettes for 2-€
3) 1 blue glass pitcher-vase for 3-€
4) 1 tupperware salt shaker for 1-€
5) 1 cute little hand painted statue of Mary & Jesus made it Italy for 1-€
(They now stand on top of my knife showcase.)
6) And last but not least, a "Boston KS" pencil sharpener for 2-€
(We had one of these in our house as I was a kid growing up so I had to have it.)

Yep! Spent a whole whopping 10-€. And as if that was not enough, on top of that, I bought us all an ICE Cream for another 10-€. We had a great time at the Flea Market and the story goes on a little bit more in my next post.
