I guess. The abdomen doesn't look like a robber fly abdomen to me, but then I only had 1 class in Entomolgy (got an A) and studied fish/wildlife at A&M.

While hunting for new knives I ran across a piece of artwork that really spoke to me. Scrimshaw of a bear holding a salmon done by Michael Scott in Alaska. Mammoth ivory on a petrified bone stand.

Very nice scrimshaw work.

Just got back from visiting my folks in Maine.
First time out to see Portland Head Lighthouse. On a side note, temps are usually 5-10 degrees cooler than what we average here in Jersey, so we thought we would enjoy a little heat relief. Such was not to be the case. It was in the mid 90s, heat index near 100, our entire week there.
Oh, well. Still great seeing Mom and Dad, fresh salt air, and some of the coastal sights.

Beautiful pictures Steve! We visited the Portland Head lighthouse a few years ago. It was foggy when we were there but the fog lifted just before we left so got some great pictures. I posted a couple here at that time. viewtopic.php?f=21&t=23880&p=660533&hil ... nd#p660533

What impressed me most was the story (documented in the museum) about the night when, during a storm, the lighthouse keeper was struck and nearly swept away by a wave as he exited the door to the light. The one you can see waaay up there on the tower where the platform is. That must have been some storm!

This bleeder is stamped WEIGAND & SNOWDEN. You pull the trigger back, that is hard to do, then you adjust the screw to how deep you want the cutting blade to go in the vein, and then you press the pedal and the spring releases into the vein.

Yikes! Looks like a good medieval turture device!
