Cudgee, I just realized it's winter where you live. I'm hemispherically challenged.

That Case knife with the fly puts me in mind of when I walk my dogs. There will be flies on the poop before I can bend over, bag it and pick it up. How do they know?

That is, in no way, meant to be a negative reflection on Case cutlery.

I know I sometimes gush over amazing science, but this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. The surface of Mars like we have never seen it before. My advice is to toggle it to full screen.

I hate to bring this thread down but it's a sad and joyous day!! This is my uncle putting the last scoop of dirt on the grave of one of our neighborhood dogs.. I love my dogs and all my friends dogs.. in my opinion they truly are a gift from God !! we had a little funeral to celebrate her life in our own little way.. my little cousin read the *rainbow bridge" poem.. if you haven't read it --don't, it'll make you cry LOL-- all good memories --Casey was a good dog and we loved her.. she was 14 and outlived her life expectancy by 3/4 years... she was a Welsh lab...

Very impressive and interesting photos. In one photo I saw characteristics of a large volume of water currents.

TFL, that has some amazing images. I too have always been mesmerized by the space program. I've often thought...that I've seen pretty much everything I could ever want to see, within my life...but, I will put wishing to see people make it to Mars and back safely, pretty high on my list of wishes.

That is truly amazing, if you did not know, you would swear that you were looking at a barren desert scene from earth. Thank you for posting this, this is one of the great things about AAPK. Thanks.

Reminds me a little of the moon pictures and deep space pictures I got many years ago courtesy of Jet Propulsion Labs.

It's hard to imagine that water did not play a role in sculpting that landscape.

They built a solar powered rover that was flown to Mars, deployed successfully and continued to function for fourteen years.

Detroit cannot build a car, ship it across country and function for five. Well, they could, but no one could afford it.

The video narration says there is clear evidence there was once water on Mars.

Current day Detroit is not the same as it was 30-40 years ago. My 2011 Chevy Silverado has 167,000 miles on it and still going strong. My son is driving it now. Never been in the shop except for oil changes and tires. They’re not making them like they used to!

They aren't sure why Mars lost its water, but one hypothesis is that some sort of huge upheaval, like the massive volcano at Mons Olympus, or a meteor strike, caused the planet to lose most of its magnetic field. Or, it is possible that Mars never had much of a rotating iron core, and therefore never had a strong magnetic field. In any case, without a strong magnetic field, there was no protection against the radiation of the solar winds, and that stripped the planet of the majority of its atmosphere and allowed the water to boil away and be swept out into space. The evaporation/condensation cycle that we have on Earth was broken and that allowed the water to be lost. The thin remaining atmosphere of Mars is now 95% carbon dioxide.

Next year (2021) another rover will land on Mars, equipped with a roving helicopter. Can't wait.

Anybody have an idea of what this creature is? The first picture of it is from inside the house, where I noticed him on the window. I went outside and he let me take a couple of pictures; before, he flew over to the fence. These fence pictures were clearer, with better lighting. He was 1 1/2 inches long. He almost looks like a giant irradiated housefly. Fuzzy legs like a moth...but flys more like a bee or fly. I've never seen anything like him. He wasn't too skittish.

And the son's of bee's saw the daughters of flies, that they were fair to look upon......

Looks like a either a Bumblebee or a Carpenter Bee. They are the two large bees in Texas. They are frquently confused with each other.

The difference tell for Joe-Blow Laymanis to look at the abdomen.

If it is really hairy, it is a Bumblebee.

If it is mostly hairless, it is a Carpenter Bee.

I've seen bumble bees before and knew it didn't quite look like a bumblebee. I wrote to 3 different people in Texas A&M's "Apiary Inspection Service". Two have already replied back...both saying it is a "Robber Fly".

I have them here, common especially around the salvia in the flower beds. Always thought they were after nectar from the flowers but apparently they’re after the other insects that are trying to get nectar. They don’t bother me. I don’t bother them.
