My latest Schrade

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Your knife is one made in China.I have a 60T made in China I have had it about three years and use it on the farm every day it not quite as good as the USA made but I cannot find any fault in it for the way I use it. I keep my USA made ones in my collection.

Hi Mr Rick, I know "Everyone has to start somewhere"
However, As this forum is for Schrade knives and items made by Schrade U.S.A.
You could have found a good used "Schrade 77OT to start somewhere" - I have found 3 "real 77OTs" selling for under $15.
Maybe you could look for a forum, for knives made in China by Taylor knives.

We always welcome new collectors here on AAPK. ::welcome::
We come here to show off our knives and learn more about our knives & knives in general.

This forum is the Schrade Legacy Forum, specifically Schrade knives made in the USA prior to the closing of Schrade in July 2004! The sense in which the word “legacy” is used here means some handed down from the past.
A few pictures of the imported Schrades are ok for comparison, but if we start having a bunch of imported Schrades posted here it will be very confusing to new Schrade collectors who are trying to learn about the old USA made Schrades.

Because the knives are so similar in looks and because Taylor Brands is using a lot of the old Schrade names (which he owns & it is his right to use) it is preferred that we don’t have a lot of the post-2004 Schrades posted in the Schrade Legacy Forum.

If there is enough interest in the post-2004 Schrades I have no problem starting a new forum for the “New” Schrades, but I thing if we start mixing them together it will be very confusing to folks who are just starting to collect Schrades

I see Rick has only been a member of AAPK for 2 days, perhaps he was not aware that there was a big difference between the Old Schrade Old Timers and the post-2004 Old Timers and a big difference in the companies who make them.
It is understandable, and if that is true, he has learned something since he joined, just like most of us learn something about every time we log on to AAPK.

There is a lot of great information on AAPK, but please, in the Schrade Legacy Forum only post pics of the post-2004 Chinese Schrades when you are doing so for comparison purposes. Otherwise we will be confusing people instead of informing them about the old Schrades we love to collect and study.

Thank you,

Well sugar. I didn't know that. I almost never come into any of the forums from the Board Index and even when I do, it's very rare I read the forum description.

From the thread title, I just assumed this thread was to show off your latest Schrade acquisition and didn't have a clue the Taylor Schrades were verboten. Every day at AAPK is a learning experience.

You and me Mr. Rick. We're learnin' sumpin today. ::handshake::

The companies like Schrade & Camillus are a bit unique in that the brands have been moved overseas, especially when in the case of Schrade the new company has kept the original names and similar designs of the US made Schrades.
When Taylor Brands LLC introduced their "new" Schrades we spent a lot of time in the Schrade Forum here & in BF trying to help old & new Schrade collectors tell the difference between the US made Schrades and those made in China by Taylor Brands. Some folks became so discouraged after spending a lot of money buying what they thought were US made Schrades that they quit knife collecting altogether. It was a nightmare I do not wish to repeat! ::dang::

Rick,
I am confident after my explanation that you will understand I prefer to keep the post-2004 Schrades to a minimum in this particular forum. Like Ken said you didn't break any rules, it was just a situation that had not arisen before. Being from a QC/QA background I am you understand my concern on this matter.

Welcome aboard Rick! I look forward to seeing more postings from you.
If you have questions on Schrade or any other knife related questions for that matter, you can get the answers here, and probably 3 or 4 different opinions as well!

Ebay Grab

Slumming around on Ebay and came up with this knife. The seller provided no picture. It has the tang stamp removed indicating a second. It is a 3 1/2" lockback with a drop point. The knife operates perfectly, and even has some closing snap.

As a small child, my dear old father (an engineer) told me about bearings “made in the U.S.A.
He showed me the bearings made in “USA China” and the GM air conditioning compressors made in “Palestine U.S.A.”.
When I started off buying tools, I always looked for tolls made in the U.S.A. or Germany.
Proud Americans always use those 3 letters and 3 full-stops – anyone trying to make you think the items were made in America, will delete the U.S.A. or play with the full-stops.

Schrade clearly stamped all of their knives “U.S.A. or “Ireland” and just before they closed down in 2004 “China”

Yes, it' a single spring and it's exactly 3 9/16".......I posted it was 3 5/8" (elsewhere) cause I thought that 3 9/16" was a weird length. As far as the frame it's built on, you would know far better than I. Looks 100% authentic and the blades are nice other than scratches and scrapes and a maybe a sharpening or two. I put it on eBay, but may have to rethink that...may be worth having the bone repaired. Clearly stamped 342 on back of the main......and it seems rare, couldn't find another on my internet searches. Appreciate the info!! ::handshake::

It looks authentic to me too. It's from the 1950's. I've not found even a Schrade Cut Co equivalent either. It is a real rare one. Here is a modern SFO that is the same pattern. Very desirable with the Slendereeno crowd. I've been eyeballing it (the 342) for a couple days. ::woot::

Yes, it is a serial number, 469, made in 2002... a bit clearer picture.
