The tree yields to the onslaught.

What kind of tree is it?
Anything worth using as grilling chips or smoking chunks?

Best guess, but still a guess, elm.

A quick Google search indicates elm isn't very popular for grilling or smoking.

But I will probably try some remnants in the woodstove this winter.

Finished up cutting soybeans yesterday evening at a couple small fields owned by a young couple. The mother came out as I was getting ready to start and said her twin boys were looking forward when I would be down with the combine. It was their 4th Birthday and they got to help harvest the fields.

That's cool Roger, those boys look like they are enjoying the ride. Making memories

.QS if you have to split any of that wood by hand you find out if it's elm, because it don't split easy.

Great fun for those boys Roger. My grandkids love riding along in the tractor cab. The oldest two are just about too big now though (not enough room).
But they'll soon be big enough to drive it themselves.

Found this guy crossing the concrete on the sidewalk. It was hurrying along when I stopped to take a look, and my Labrador Retriever Mazie decided she needed to investigate it too, which made it decide to curl up in the "fetal position" .
It was a big un' - about the size of my little finger. We let it go. Not sure what it was feeding on but figure maybe we'll see it as a moth or butterfly next spring.

According to this website:
https://owlcation.com/stem/furry-caterpillar that is an "Io Caterpillar". It will grow-up to be either a male (top) or female (bottom). Cool! Check out this note on the caterpillar:
Note: Be careful when looking for the Io caterpillar. This insect is poisonous! A prick from one of its venomous spines feels like a bee sting. While being pricked is not life-threatening, it can really hurt.

They are exceptionally painful. I was lying on a park bench and felt something crawling on my belly. I made the mistake of brushing at it. The pain was intense and I thought I was going to pass out. There were tracks across my belly for months. We call 'em ' oak asps'.

Thanks for that link. I guess it's a good thing we left it be. I don't trust any of them that have furry spines. Maizie put her nose almost on it though when she was investigating it.

Prior to that it was scurrying along, but when she put her nose close to smell it, that's when it curled up.
"Oak asp" makes sense as it was under a huge Bur Oak on the east side of our house. May have been feeding on oak leaves.

Hi folks,
Ever go out looking for knives & come home with a few other things?
When I visited my mom in MD we went to several antique stores and flea markets so that I could look for knives. I have already posted pictures of the knives but here are some other things I picked up in & around MD.
I especially like the cow & horse heads.

I need to find some place to put them.
TCGB,
Tom

All nice pickups. Especially like the iron and glass buckets and the painted swan. But also the cow and horse hooks.

The last time I went riding was a few years ago on a 4-wheeler in the dunes. I had a blast - ripping & jumping, just like when I was a teenager! Afterwards, my thighs were burning so much I could barely walk. I decided I was probably getting too old for this stuff...

My wife recently surprised me with a trip to Tucson, Arizona. I had wanted to see those saguaro cactus for years and finally got my chance. Here's a few trip pics. We visited both halves of the Saguaro National Park and also made a drive up Mt. Lemmon. I love the southwest.

Thanks for the fine photos Phil. I lived west of Tucson for 4 years. Winters were fine, but 115 degrees in the summer was downright innervating. Not every day of course. Did you visit Tombstone?
