Landed a couple Congress knives yesterday, the Northfield looks interesting, will have to see if I hit a home run when it shows up.

Fished this one out of the bay yesterday. First purchase in a long time.
Odd 3-bladed Utica made for S.H. Kress. Google says they were a chain of five and dimes.
Just under $12 shipped . . . .

Until I looked it up, I thought you had mistaken it for Kresge's 5¢&10¢ stores. You know those today as K-Mart. I don't recall ever seeing one of the S.H. Kress stores. Checking Wikipedia, I guess I don't recall seeing one because it was a southern brand.

I remember a Kress five & dime when I was a young boy. When we went into town, Orlando, Mother would sometimes go to the Kress store. That was back in the early '50s.

Edit: had to google Kress, interesting history, including segregated lunch counter issues. I remember the 2 water fountains on the wall and the way they were marked. The store I remembered is now a fancy steak house on west Church Street in Orlando according to Wikipedia. West Church street just off Orange Avenue was a favorite place as a boy and teenager. There was an ancient hardware store on the south side of the street, Bumby Hardware, wood floors, walls covered with new and used guns and of course any hardware item ever made. Across the street was B.E. Purcell a general merchandise store, it catered to the ranch people. They sold saddles, boots, washing machines, clothes, etc.. Bought my 1st Stetson there, a beaver fur, Silver belly color. Genuine 501 Levi Strauss blue jeans were $3.50 per pair and as I recall they were shrink to fit back then. That's way before some of these strange folks decided it was cool to wear real Levis. I best not go there.
I must be gettin' old, this is the 2nd time I've reminisced today.

I think you nailed it Roger, did not even know these existed. I found a previous post showing an ivory handled one that looks very similar. Oh well lesson learned and the seller takes returns so it will probably go back.

John,1 thing I noticed about the Olbertz made knives is the tang are extra wide on the small blades,It is even true on the pen blades on their toenails.

Positive about the Utica I.D.?

The shield and the fluted bolsters on that knife positively scream Camillus to me. Even the profile of that caplifter/screwdriver looks like a dead ringer for the Camillus MIL-K-818 "demo" knives from a little later on. I could definitely be wrong of course!

Either way, Utica or Camillus, that's a nice and very unique cattleman! Great find and great price!

Nope, just going on the seller's description.
Pictures would not expand; the only visible tang stamp simply reads "DICTATOR".

I mainly collect fixed blades, but there are several categories of folding knives that I "accumulate" - -

First, a category of folders I accumulate is advertising knives related to feed stores. A paternal great-grandfather, my paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather and my father all ran feed stores in various small towns and communities in Texas - Noack, Taylor, Rockdale, Georgetown and Bartlett.


My latest incoming instrument of death and destruction in this genre is a humble "nutter" by Kutmaster, advertising Kent Feeds, a mid-west brand.



Another genre indicative of my warped sense of humor is airline knives. I mean, what better way to demonstrate hypocrisy than to display items advertising companies who now ban the possession of said advertisements while using the services being advertised?

This little gem is a 25+ y.o. example of an inexpensive Chinese imitation of a successful product - a SAK-style multi-function knife representing Continental Express, a budget airline started in 1986 and a regional venture between Continental and United.




And last, but not least, - a Coupe Choux (Cabbage Cutter), aka the M1831 French Artillery Short Sword coming from the UK, so it will be a while before I get my grubby paws on it.

A couple more Flea buys last night

Kabar 1030 Needs a bath big time but it looks solid, and a Shefield made Bufallo horn pen knife that may be a John Petty circa 1848.
I have 2 Petty-s from John Petty & Sons circa 1868-88. This new pen looks too simil;ar to be anyone elses work.
I'll find out in a few days, I hope.

As far as I know they were made for Case brand by Colonial in the late 70's. I have a lot more reading to do on them but I do know they are a very nice quality knife, and they sell for very little loot.
I think I paid less than 30 bucks for the two of them on the auction(s) so they can be bought for a lot less.

I've carried a few of them, and they really are the perfect little EDC knives.

There is a forum here (AAPK) for them, I'm not yet up to speed but I'm sure there is some interesting history behind the brand.
I kind of dig the knives that have sorted histories.
They may not be as valuable as their counterparts but to me they are just as collectible. The more I learn the more interesting they become.

Similar to the John Petty(?) above. He went into knife making in Shefield twice. Once as a pocket knife manufacturer in 1840. He quit in 1848, raised a family. Then he went back into knife making as John Petty, and sons 1n 1868. He passed in 1888 then his widow, and sons ran the company until the early 1900's (1923 I think), Barrel Brand was one of their trade marks. Story knives...
