Re: GOT SHIELDS?
This has been a while coming trying to find this shield. The knife is probably the most produced knife Remington made, R1823, but the shield is very difficult to find.

Cool shields with the Shuttle and the WILD-DUCK.
Dimitri, I don't think your shield qualifies as unusual because it pales in comparison to the knife itself. WOW!

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Got Shields? Have I ever got shields on this knife! Six to be exact!
Seems like a real gamblers knife with each of the suits represented in three shields of either copper or nickel silver on both sides of the genuine ivory handles.
Never seen one like this before, I'd be interested if anyone knows anything about it.

Very cool knife...and a genuine ivory Sheffield knife, to boot. Doesn't get much better than that.

I looked through all of my reference books and couldn't find any information on J. Powell & Son or Arrow works. Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings lists a "Powell" marking circa 1914 but has no other info. Sorry I can help more. If I run across anything else, I'll let you know.

Cool shields all
.. In particular that 6 shield knife posted above is very cool Another Knife Collector
...
Here's something different - a "waterfall" celluloid shield made by Thomaston Knife Co on a sleeveboard pen... This was a patent by Charles Platts (one of the 5 sons of the father Charles) in 1922 when Platts was the manager of Thomaston from 1916 until the company ended in 1930... The patent for the celluloid shield claimed it was more durable than nickel silver as it didn't tarnish and was easier to engrave with initials
... Note the pile side stamp is "pat applied for"... if Charles only knew the issues with celluloid

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Thanks Keith
... The celluloid definitely looks stable in the shield (for now
)... hope it stays that way. The handle may also be dark celluloid (dark is supposedly is more stable because more binders were added in the production) though it really has the appearance of bakelite to me so not sure of handle itself...

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
That knife reminds me of Schatt and Morgan's dollar knives. That's a cool knife buddy, although celluloid gives me the heebie jeebies. They are a dangerous seductress.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Thanks Lyle
- and yes celluloid is by far not my favorite handle material and I always pass on it except for the 5 celluloid knives I have which were specially priced and unique knives - in this case the knife made me buy it
... One thing I try and do is photograph the few celluloid knives so if they "explode" I will still have some memories
... I set myself a low price as a maximal value for celluloid purchasing
but overall as much as I like some looks of celluloid I stay far away...

Thanks Dimitri, I posted it on another thread and Phil suggested I post it here because of the shield, he had never seen one.

Here is one I had never seen before. It is an eight bladed Japanese made camper style knife tang stamped "Ekikanetsugu stainless steel Japan". It has a neat cross shaped shield. I picked it up at our first local flea market of the season yesterday.

I like that Texas Longhorn shield, Greg...simple yet elegant and evocative. Normally, I tend to prefer simple, minimalist shields like that, but recently these two colorful ones caught my eye and tickled my fancy.

That Ruger shield is generally a high demand knife.
