I had one of those show up at my feeder back in the spring. He hung around for a second day but hasn't been seen since. I think he was just resting up before completing his migratory travels.

They are not as plentiful as cardinals, jays ,finches and sparrows, but we have them year around. As the crow flies I don't figure I'm but about 100 miles south of you and Phil so I don't know why they are not in your area. They are one of the most fun of all the birds to watch, they scratch around looking for food and the leaves and grass fly. ::tu::

That is the thing. They love to scratch around on the ground among the leaves and litter and this usually requires some woodland. That is where I encountered my one sighting. I heard all the commotion as leaves were rustling on the ground; in Missouri. Here, while there are trees around, the predominant habitat is pasture land. This puts a big crimp on the variety of species.

You’ve seen the end of this oldster in a number of my knife pics, so I thought I’d show off the rest of it!
It’s a post war, made in West Germany, six footer. I looked it up and I think it’s probably ‘50’s. I picked it up a swapmeet just because it was old and I liked it. Now it lives on the shelf in my room as my go to measure.

This calendar from my grandfather's store was purchased at auction in 1977. The purchaser made the frame for it, hung it up in his house and enjoyed it for many years. After his death, his wife wished that it would stay in my family, and long story short, it came to me. When she and her brother stopped in with it about two years ago, she would take nothing for it even after I told her that I would part with a fair amount of money in an auction setting to keep it in the family. She said that knowing it would be appreciated was all she wanted. The calendar is loved by us, but the kindness and generosity of someone we did not even know are the things we will treasure and strive to implement in our lives.

That's an amazing story. Cool old school artwork and family history tied up in a gift from a stranger. Wow!

It's a FREE photo editor program called PhotoScape. It's similar to Photoshop but not as powerful. ---► http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/download.php

Yes, there is a learning curve but they have a great online help resource. Try it out. You can't break it and you'll be glad you did.

A knife maker I particularly admire, David Boye.
"Artist, inventor, researcher, innovator, David Boye has pursued an “out of the box” lifestyle since leaving doctoral studies in social psychology in 1968. Completely self taught in the art and craft of knife making, he transferred his seminal knowledge in his popular and now classic book, “Step by Step Knifemaking,” first published in 1976. Never one to stay still, David went on to revolutionize blade making with his discovery of dendritic metallurgy, which enhances edge holding capability from 2-50X." [Nor does it rust.]

I really like David Boye knives. Got one around here somewhere.

What he claims about his "Dendritic Steel" is not BS.
