Good officer. I remember when I was in training, to get a rare compliment from an NCO or officer was a great motivator. Never forgot that later on when I could in turn give some motivation. He then turned to me and said; "Good job Marine! Carry on

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Well, I finally got to go out and shoot the MINI-14 Ranch. I really like the gun. Recoil is minimal and the report is, well. HUGE. The gun felt really good on the shoulder and I suffered no ill-effects of 150-rounds of the .223. The only negetive that I found, and I already knew about this, was that the rear sights would come loose after only one round. In fact, the rear sight would come loose from just allowing the bold to slam closed. After looking at the exploded view of the MINI-14 I found that a part was missing, the rear sight dovetail slide. Since I bought the gun used, I guess the previous owner had removed the rear sight and lost that piece. Anyway, I'm trying to work with Ruger to get the replacement part. I didn't worry too much about accuracy since I couldn't keep the sight tightened down, but will work on that after I've replace that part. All in all, I think it is a great little rifle and like it a lot.

How did that 30 round mag. work out? Can you recommend it?

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
It worked well, manufactured by ProMag. With the exception of one failed chambering, first round, it was flawless for the next 90 or so rounds. Had the same thing happen with the original Ruger 5-round mag, also the very first round, which leads me to blame the ammunition or an operator mal-function.
I do think that I am going to go with a 20-round mag though.
My son was with me. He had just bought a Mosin Nagant, 7.62x54R, I think he paid $125 for it at a local gun shop. Man that thing must be about five-feet long. Five shot bolt action. That gun also shot well. Mine was louder

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Ahhh yes, but the Mosin-Nagant kicks much harder. I have two of 'em. The first was given to me by my dad who had traded a lawn mower for it. I gave it to my son because he killed his first deer with it. I got it back after an incident which shall not be discussed. The 2nd one I bought at a gun show in Wisconsin after I had given the first one to my son.
7.62x54R shoots a loooong way. The popular name for the round is 7.62x54 Russian but if I'm not mistaken the proper name is 7.62x54 Rimmed. It was developed by the Russians for the Mosin-Nagant and introduced in 1891 so it's an old cartridge. I believe the Russians still use it today in their sniper rifles and some machine guns.
Does your son plan to have his cut down and "sporterized"? She's a big, heavy, unwieldy old bazitch but she's a fine, fine shooter.
Keep me posted on the Mini-14 magazines. Please.

Funny you should mention the Mosin-Nagant.
I have been thinking about getting one just for long shots.
I read a recent article on them, for such old technology they sure seem to shoot.
I see them now and again for $99 around here.

See if you can get one with all numbers matching. (bolt, receiver, trigger group, etc) You won't be sorry Dale and there's a ton of cheap ammo around for 'em. They're not a collector's item so you can do what ever you want to them without worrying that you're devaluing them.

About 20 years ago, Roses department store sold hundreds (at least) of these Mosin-Nagants for $39 + tax. No background checks, cash and carry. Most everybody I knew had one, I still got mine. Great shooter for the money.

Thanks guys, I figured they were a good deal.
Junebug, Big 5 is where I have seen most of them for the cheapest price. Other places have them but they are a few $$ more.

Roses was selling those Mosin Nagant's and Ishapore Arms made Enfields for $50.00 each in 1998 just before they went real down market in their offerings and became a third rate crap shop. I still need to finish the conversion on the one I bought.

Roses was (and still is in a limited way) a NC based, SE regional "dime store" or minature version of K-Mart - they were big in surplus arms for about a decade. When I was a boy/teenager I bought my ammo there. OH

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
I don't want anyone to think I'm old,
but when I was a teen E.J. Korvett's had a fiber barrel full of those M.N.s for $19.99 and cheap ammo to go with. All you needed was a driver license to prove you were 18, and a $20 bill. I took my purchase to an old gravel pit to try it out. The local police drove in, saw that I was shooting safely into the gravel bank and drove back out without even stopping their car, and that was back in New Jersey !!! There's a large hospital and health complex now where that gravel pit once was, and N.J. police would arrest an 18 year old caught with a sling shot. My how times have changed.
I later bought a "semi-inletted " sporter stock for that rifle from Herter's, but after moving it all 3 or 4 times without getting around to working on the project, tossed it all. I wish I still had it. I see them at the local gun shows for about $100, but refuse to spend that much for something I once had and trashed. I don't know if walnut sporter stocks are still available anywhere. I sure do miss
Herter's !! Just reading their catalog was a hoot.
I've got a 7.62 Swede now that was already sporterized. Another old relic that's fun to shoot.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Fran, per your example, the difficulty in today's world is finding someplace to shoot it.
At $100 today, those guns are cheaper than they were when they were selling for $20. According to an online inflation calculator, $20 in 1968 bought the same goods as it would take $132.40 to buy today. No wonder I could live well and buy a home on $3.50 an hour.

Heres an old US Revolver I picked up yesterday...38 short.....I believe this gun was made by Iver Johnson Arms..
When the feller told me about it on the phone...I said I might be interested...but I was disappointed that it wasn't a top break when I first saw it.
