Yesterday morning, my trip to the post office produced this advertising pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a W. H. MORLEY & SONS, GERMANY, one blade (broken), one tool (a file wth a blade tip), four tang stamps, 3 1/8" closed, all metal, one spring, advertising, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "W. H. (over) MORLEY (over) & SONS (over) GERMANY" The main blade back tang stamp has the "clover" logo. The tool front tang stamp says, "W. H. (over) MORLEY (over) & SONS (over) GERMANY" The tool back tang stamp has the "clover" logo. The main handle side says, "THE CANTON - STAMPING & ENAMELING COMPANY. - CANTON, OHIO, U.S.A." The other handle side says, "MANUFACTURERS OF - "FRENCH GRAY" ENAMEL WARE. - STANDARD WORLD OVER" This is my first W. H. MORLEY & SONS pocket knife in THIS pattern or style. This is my first pocket knife that advertises this particular company, business, product, event, etc. The main blade stub does have a CRISP half stop. The main blade stub does have a VERY GOOD opening snap. The main blade stub does have a VERY GOOD closing snap. The tool does have a CRISP half stop. The tool does have a VERY GOOD opening snap. The tool does have a VERY GOOD closing snap. Despite the broken main blade, this pocket knife is still in FAIR condition. I did give it a VERY MINOR cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

The VERY LAST picture posted below is that of a W & H tang stamped, advertising pocket knife that "eluded" me. I first posted it, under this topic or thread, back on Thursday, September 1, 2022. It has two blades instead of one blade and one tool. HOWEVER, the handles and the advertising are identical. So, I am 99.999% positive that W. H. MORLEY & SONS, GERMANY, either directly made, or had a hand in the making of, this particular pattern or style of advertising pocket knife for the Whitehead & Hoag Company. Now to find an actual W & H tang stamped pocket knife with the same handles and advertising. STAY TUNED.....

Just doing a simple, basic, Google search, did NOT provide much information about, or products from, THE CANTON STAMPING & ENAMELING COMPANY. The tiny bit of information that I did find, was on the "Historic Ridgewood" website. The VERY LAST picture is a postcard, circa ?, of THE CANTON STAMPING & ENAMELING COMPANY plant or factory. It is NOT my item, it is NOT my picture.

Yesterday morning, my trip to the post office produced this pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a W & H, one blade, one tool (a buttonhook), two tang stamps, 2 1/8" closed, one spring, pocket knife. This W & H pocket knife has two of the "block" style tang stamps. The main blade front tang stamp says, "THE W. & H. Cᴏ̲ (over) NEWARK, N.J." The tool front tang stamp says, "THE W. & H. Cᴏ̲ (over) NEWARK, N.J." I believe the "block" style of tang stamp is the oldest of the W & H tang stamps. The main handle side features the full, standing, image of a female. The other handle side features the portrait style images of two females, one is VERY faint. This is my third W & H, buttonhook, pattern or style of pocket knife. My other two W & H, buttonhook pocket knives, were both previously posted under this topic or thread. My first one, with a broken buttonhook, was posted back on Sunday, May 30, 2021. My second one was posted back on Friday, July 30, 2021. I believe that these W & H, buttonhook, pattern or style of pocket knives, are the oldest of the W & H pocket knives. This pocket knife main blade does have an OK half stop. This pocket knife main blade does have an OK opening snap. This pocket knife main blade does have an OK closing snap. This pocket knife tool does have an OK half stop. This pocket knife tool does have an OK opening snap. This pocket knife tool does have an OK closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. It did NOT require any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
A few days ago, my trip to the post office produced this advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the latest example to be added to my collection. It is an Imperial, one blade, one tang stamp, 2 7/32" closed, all metal, advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "Imperial (with crown) (over) STAINLESS (over) U.S.A." The main handle side says, "COTTON BELT ROUTE - THE RAILROAD OF COURTESY" The other handle side says, "FINDER PLEASE RETURN TO - NEAREST COTTON BELT AGENT" This is my fifth fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife, that advertises this particular company, business, product, event, etc. ALL four of my other COTTON BELT ROUTE pocket knives have been previously posted, under and throughout, this topic or thread. However, this is my first COTTON BELT ROUTE pocket knife that does NOT have a W & H tang stamped blade. It is more than likely that the W & H tang stamped blade got damaged and a previous owner replaced it with this Imperial pocket knife blade. I am 99.999% sure that Imperial did NOT make or have a hand in the making of this pocket knife. I believe that this is just another example of a previous owner combining the surviving parts of two different pocket knives, to make one, functional, pocket knife. I do NOT believe that this was an attempt to deceive any potential buyer. This blade does NOT have a half stop. This blade does have an OK opening snap. This blade does have a GOOD closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is still in GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning at all. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

As a fan of knives, railroads, and someone living fairly close to St Louis, I always enjoy seeing these, replacement blade, or not. The old Cotton Belt freight depot is an offbeat attraction on the St Louis riverfront......for those who like decaying architecture.

This blade does have a WEAK half stop. This blade does have an OK opening snap. This blade does have a GOOD closing snap. This pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

There is PLENTY of information and there are PLENTY of images to be found on the internet,
regarding The Whitehead & Hoag Company itself and the variety of advertising items that were available.
However, as far as the W & H advertising pocket knives are concerned, per GOINS 1998 edition..... "c 1870-1959
Whitehead & Hoag was founded in 1870. They went out of business about 1959. This was an advertising specialties firm;
the knives were made for them by a variety of cutlery manufacturers." I have been thinking, for some time now,
that GOINS may NOT be entirely, 100% accurate in their description. Again, I do have a theory about this,
but I still have no hard evidence to support it. NOT YET anyway. Hopefully there will be more clues to follow.....

Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
Recently, my trip to the post office produced this advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a W & H, one blade, one tang stamp, 2 1/16" closed, all metal, advertising, fob or key ring, pattern or style of pocket knife. The tang stamp is the curved or arched style, WITH the USA in the middle. The main blade front tang stamp says, "THE W & H CO (over) USA (over) NEWARK NJ" The main handle side says, "FOX LOCKS" It also says "PATENTED" above the loop or ring. The other handle side says nothing, it is blank. This is my first W & H pocket knife that advertises this particular product, company, business, organization, event, etc. This blade does have a SOFT half stop. The blade does have a VERY GOOD opening snap. The blade does have a VERY GOOD closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need cleaning. I just wiped it off. I took some pictures and here it is.

With just a simple, basic, Google search, there is information and there are many items to be found, regarding The Fox Police Lock Company. I am 99.999% positive that the "FOX LOCKS" advertised on the posted pocket knife is the same company or at the very least, is somewhat or closely related to The Fox Police Lock Company. The following item, is a VERY brief description that I found. Per Wikipedia.....
"Police lock"
"A police lock is a type of high-security door lock. There are two distinct kinds of police lock.
The first is floor-mounted. It consists of a steel bar running on at a roughly 45° angle from the center of the door to the floor, on the inside of the area to be secured. At each end of the bar are slots or fixtures (one in the door, one in the floor) into which the steel bar is secured. This was designed by Emiel Fox (born 1869 or 1870, died 1941). Patents relating to early versions of the lock go back to at least 1907. Fox set up the Fox Police Lock Company in New York City to manufacture the locks under the brand name Police Lock; other companies have made similar locks under the same designation, so the term has become genericized to a degree. The name comes from the police procedure for securing a damaged door, which uses a similarly angled piece of sturdy wood nailed in place. This type of police lock provides considerable security since it is even harder to break with physical force than a deadbolt – to defeat this kind of lock, the door must be at least partially destroyed or removed from its frame. Another type of lock also called a police lock and also formerly made by the Fox Police Lock Company is the crossbar police lock. It features two steel bars across the width of the door and beyond, held by two brackets set in the doorframe. When the door is unlocked, the bars are moved inwards to the point of being withdrawn from the brackets. Police locks are particularly associated with New York City in the 20th century, and are sometimes seen in movies set in that place and time. Floor-mounted types were designed for use with wooden doors and have been superseded with the advent of metal doors and doorframes. A copy of the original crossbar type of police lock is still made and imported from China."

Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
Recently, my visit to the post office produced this advertising pocket knife. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. It also became the latest example to be added to my collection. It is a W & H, two blades, two tang stamps, 3 1/8" closed, all metal, advertising, pocket knife. Both the main blade and the secondary blade tang stamps are the curved or arched style, WITHOUT the USA in the center. The main blade front tang stamp says, "THE W. & H. CO. (over) NEWARK, N.J." The secondary blade front tang stamp also says, "THE W. & H. CO. (over) NEWARK, N.J." The main handle side says, "SCOTTISH UNION & NATIONAL - INSURANCE COMPANY - HARTFORD, CONN." and also has a "coat of arms" or "crest" type of logo or emblem. The other handle side says, "1824-ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY-1924" This is my sixth, W & H pocket knife, that advertises this particular company, business, product, organization, event, etc. My other five, "SCOTTISH UNION" pocket knives, have ALL been previously posted, under and throughout, this topic or thread. This main blade has NO half stop. This main blade has an OK opening snap. This main blade has an OK closing snap. This secondary blade has NO half stop. This secondary blade has an OK opening snap. This secondary blade has NO closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. This pocket knife did NOT need any cleaning. I just wiped it off.
I took some pictures and here it is.
