Here's the view looking back out the front door of the local hardware store. Owner has a nice collection of older Coleman lanterns above the doorway. And yes, he sells knives there too.

Cool Phil - and yup, I can see a few knives in the display case in the lower left corner of the pic.

Went in to town today to help my daughter hang some shelves and get settled in her new 22nd floor apartment I just don't understand these city dwellers.

I couldn't sleep up there that high.

Here's a fairy ring that appeared recently in my daughters yard.

I get only semi-circles in my yard. and sometimes a near perfect North - South straight line.

This blade mill was used for sharpening newly fabricated blades, including scythes, swords, sickles, and knives. This is a bandoned Blade-Mill in France, built in the 17th century.
I wonder what the French Laws are concerning Metal Detectors? Not that your find would be distinguishable after 400 years in the Earth.
Perhaps I would find myself in: de la prison.

That's what I see, but I sometimes see things others don't.

Apparently, this is some place in Turkey.

I used to jump out of airplanes, but I could not crawl out there to sit like that. The photo makes me queezy.

Interestingly though, I could rappel off that, if I had a rope that reached the ground.

I sure hope she has at least a 300 ft rope, a good anchor spot inside the apartment, and rappelling gear in case of fire.

When I worked in a multi-story office building, I had a spare set rappelling set-up chained up under my desk along with a tool or two for taking out a large window if necessary.

Ran into this big fella (literally) while mowing the neighbor's yard.

NO WAY!!!

Charlie I admire you. Have for a long time. There's no way in the world I could repel off that point or free base jump from there. I'm a big chicken when it comes to heights (although I can appreciate the view) and I'll freely admit it.

Looks like one of the many types of golden orb spider. They're pretty much harmless to humans, at least those around here are. But they sure make big ornate webs.

Ken, the only danger that those big ole Orb spiders pose is to the weak of heart who are scared of spiders.

We actually had an EMS call once where a lady literally had a heart attack when a large black and yellow Golden Orb spider here in central Texas fell on her while she was sitting on her back porch.

Thanks for identifying that spider for me. Very pretty. I left him be. I had grass to cut.

If you see big homer on that pit bull, you'll know it was photo shopped, chopped or whatever, because I can't even walk down a steep staircase.

Phil, when I was younger, I had no fear of heights.

Not too many years ago, I was always asked to change the light bulbs and colored spots in the ceiling of our A-Framed church sanctuary. The security of the very tall ladder against the slopping roof was dubious, because a proper position could not be obtained because of the arrangement of the pews, I scooted up that thing without a second thought. The peak was quite high.

Lately, however, I have developed a less than fearless attitude towards heights. When I walked up to the edge of The Grand Canyon in 2001, it literally sucked the breath out of my lungs. I had no problem standing there or walking out to the many points we visited. It was just that first sight. I was not expecting that.

There are videos on YouTube of guys climbing thousand foot towers to change the aircraft warning beacons at the top. Those now make me very uncomfortable. My stomach turns over.

Same thing when I first saw the woman on that outcropping. Queezy, queezy, queezy.

I would not base jump off anything. That just seems anathema to parachute safety to me. I want a very definite opening technique, not a little drag chute thrown out to the air with the hopes it will deploy the main. And I want an unobstructed path to the ground, no towers, no buildings, no cliff sides.

However, the thought of rappelling from that height with a good harness (not a homemade Swiss Seat, which I have done with just a loop of self-braided rope, which I still have BTW), a good large carabiner, a good quality, unused, but pre-stretched rope of sufficient length and high quality gloves, I would do it. The thought of that doesn't bother me, for some reason. I loved rappelling.

Myself and half a dozen other guys once planned to rappel down the unwindowed side of the multi-story base hospital at Ft. Bragg. We had it all planned out and all equipment gathered. Had reconnoitered access to the roof.

Cooler, more intelligent heads and a fear of Federal imprisonment put a stop to it.
