As I guessed above a retailer and like you Charlie saw it last night as the first hit on google for confirmation - but you beat me to the punch this morn as I was too lazy last night to post followup
...
Interestingly Jenner & Knewstub (a knife I posted here recently) was also a London retailer but also maker of cutlery etc that made dressing cases etc etc... guess a popular item in mid 1800s for many of the aristocracy

I think this may qualify. I picked this up for $5 at the knife show Sunday. The tang stamp says Jackson, Fremont O.
From what I have had read, its from Jackson Knife & Shear in Fremont, OH, and is not common. The pile side is rougher, but $5 well spent IMO

Both that Jackson and the Belmont are nice and rare knives.
Anyone know what the "scalloped" bolster design on the Belmont is called?

Neat old knife, Mark!
According to Carter's "German Knife and Sword Makers", Germania Cutlery Works was a mark of Kastor & Co. AG. Founded in 1892 and out of business by 1936. You probably already knew this. I really have nothing further to add to what has already been posted as to the why of the lead inlays.

It was made by Hugo Heinz, "Messerfabrik: Hildburghausen in Thuringen", from "German Knife and Sword Makers". I assume this is saying he was a master fabricator located in Thuringen? The tang stamp on you knife was registered in 1919. In 1930 Hugo was listed as a maker of pocket knives, hunting knives and farriers' knives. I do not want to post scans of the page from the book due to copyright infringement.

I like the long, pinched bolsters and the spear master blade with the XL ALL stamp. I would think there should be some information out there based on that blade stamp, but, I am coming up blank.
Great find of a rare knife, Glennbad!
Great price as well.
Nice Belmont, Scott, love that scalloped bolster!
No idea if there is a name for that style bolster.

This jack knife 3 1/2" closed, is simply stamped PLYMOUTH KNIFE CO on both blades. Is this the forerunner of American Knife Plymouth ?

Nice old knife, Barry. Wood looks good and a classic looking master blade, I would take one like that, any day of the week, over a brand new modern knife. Even with a broken blade.
