My latest Schrade

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

G'day Schradeaholic's , I received a couple of fixed blades today , a 13OT and 162UH , It took a while to snag a MIB 13OT at the right price and i'm really happy with this one.One thing I have noticed with a few Schrades , with 1095 & the Schrade+ stainless blades , some appear to have a visible hamon line along the edge,I have tried to take a pic of this on the 13OT (barely visible in the pic) .The other thing I noticed today on the 162UH was the tapered tang , I pulled a few other Schrades outa the cabinet and found the 164 tang is also tapered , maybe loveless inspired i dunno , but it was a nice surprise.

What the heck is a "hamon line" and is it contagious?

I'm tickled pink with this 77 OT Keith (Ozzie Marie) gifted me with at the Janesville show this weekend. Brand new, in the box, one each for me and my two grandsons. Thanks again Keith.

By the way, anyone have one of these? Not my knives, not my auction.

The Hamon line is the line where the harder metal & softer metal meet as a result of the tempering. The terminology comes from Japan and Samurai Swords, IIRC.

The swords are harder on the edge (to cut) but softer in the spine (to flex). The hamon line is where the two different hardnesses meet. The sword has to be properly polished to best show the hamon line.

Check out this article:
http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/hamon.html

Notice the 4th paragraph: “Do not confuse the real hamon with the white made-up pattern by the modern style polishing.”

I have seen what appears to be a hamon line on Schrades and other modern knives, I have even caused the phenomenon to appear when buffing a knife, but it is not a true hamon line.

Nice Muskrat! ::tu:: Keith is one of the good’uns!

Thanks Shearer! ::tu::
I put in a bid, but I am too broke at the moment to chase it too far.
I am going down to get my new (to me), old pickup this weekend & hope to have enough cash to pay it off.

It will be nice to have a pickup I can work on without any computers in it! ::cr:: ::cr::

Hi Grant,
That ST175 was a good buy. They are getting harder to find now-a-days.
Hi Dale,
I have been looking for a "902 OLD TIMER" for some time now (for my 2000-2004 Schrade Collection)
I'm still looking for the SQ111 Black Ice - I do not think Schrade made one!

I think LARRY303, had some 902OT's at one time.

Grant, a mate gave me this IQ180 and I have not had my ST175 out of it box, to look at it yet.... Ken.
