Fresh off the bench - I like the top one better, my instructor likes the bottom one better - constructive feedback sought.

Tom, I like the bottom one more also, and agree with 'Q' about the butt end. Your hollow bevel grinds look great! Did you free hand grind them? I have been practicing free hand, but not happy with results yet ... still using a jig. Many Two L@@kers for sure!

yes, my instructor won’t allow any jigs or fixtures so hand grinding, sanding, buffing and polishing only. My grinds are improving but definitely a work in progress. Thanks for the kind compliments.

Rick Hill Custom (sn:006). Rick was from Maryville, Illinois and passed away in July 2023. I got it 20 years ago from a friend who bought it from Rick back in the 90s(?). Haven't heard much more about him, only learned a little when I stumbled across his obituary. He did good work and I'm proud to have it.

Very nicely photographed Micarta handled knife, Q.

The few Micarta examples that I own seem to produce kind of boring photos. The Micarta needs a bit of help to be interesting. Here are three shots of an A G Russell that I have. First photo with natural light. Second with the UV illumination in addition to natural light. Third photo same as second but with contrast increased.

I need a UV light that produces a more diffused beam to get rid of the UV glare on the background.

Hey Q - I like the look of this RR. Can you give me your take on it ... good snap (close to as good as the Rosecrafts), fit and finish ? Love how some of the newer RR's are getting away from the matchstrike nail nick - the nick on this one looks so much better.

Cool and unusual knife, Joe I don't recall ever seeing a Remington with an opening hole like that before but I like it Kind of similar to the famous Spyderco "Spidie hole" but on your Remi it seems better integrated with the blade geometry instead of sticking up and standing out prominently like the Spidie holes tend to do.

Like you, I enjoy experimenting with different photography techniques and I found your photo lighting experiment interesting. I never would have thought to try adding UV illumination. Perhaps a less reflective material would also help eliminate the UV glare on the background

Hey John, here's my take on the Rough Ryder APTA RR2285:
I don't know what "APTA" stands for.....I thought maybe "Adjustable Pivot Tension....something" Tried searching but couldn't find an answer. But, the adjustable pivot is an interesting feature.....it even comes with a Torx tool in the storage pouch. I experimented with it a bit because I noticed that at about 45° open the blade on mine had a slight "grinding" feeling like metal on metal being pinched too tightly. When I backed off the Torx screw, it didn't fix the grinding sensation but it did make the snap noticeably lighter. So, I put a couple drops of Quick Release on the kick (thanks again for sending me the bottle of QR, it's good stuff ), but that didn't fix the issue either. I think the surfaces of spring and tang are probably just not finished smoothly and that's what's causing the grinding sensation. But the APTA does have a really good, hard, crisp snap and solid half-stop.

Compared to my RoseCraft knives, I would rate the F&F on this RR as somewhat lesser quality all around. But, it is also about half the cost of a RC, too (around $30, compared to RCs which generally run about $60). It's not horrible by any means, just not quite as nice. It's a solid, sturdy "blue collar" knife with some heft to it that's clearly designed and built more for hard work than for showing off. When the blade is fully open, it feels almost like a fixed blade knife. And, I really like the tactile feel of the blue denim Micarta....very grippy.

I had forgotten that I bought one of these a few years ago but didn't really like it that much, so I sold it (picture of my first one below). But, I guess my taste changed because I actually like my new one

I have asked a few times, on the forum, about the production of this knife with no answer coming forth.
It's one of my favorite carries. Due to my old hands not functioning as they used to I have difficulty with the thumb hole.
It's not one of my favorite ways of opening a knife anyway but it could get you out of a pinch.
It has a wonderful solid lock and in many ways I find it superior to the Buck 110. Don't tell anyone I said that.
