I just googled Mastodon and then Mammoth to get more information. Turns out that the Mastodon, likely at least a couple spceies are from the America's only. At first thought to be northern America only, but a specimen was found in S. America. The Mammoth was widespread, worldwide. Interesting reading. They say that the mammoth/mastodon died out 11,000 years ago, but my readings suggest that may be off 3 or 4 thousand years. One reason is because of the Clovis Point (prehistoric spearhead used to hunt large game), depending on your source was used up until 5-9,000 years ago.

Another tidbit I find real interesting is from several tribes of North American Native Americans. There is some tribal lore that suggests that the Mastodon could have still been around as late as the early 1700's. There are also a couple of unverified accounts by American explorers of a large hairy elephant like beast. There are also unverified accounts in South America and Russia.

They are as old as 3.75 million years ago.

No, I just read a lot instead of TV. I do have a habit of reading only what I'm interested in. When I do watch TV, it's usually National Geographic or Discovery channel where I just finished watching the Dangerous Catch series they have done since 1999 or so.

The bit with the Mastodon actually came from class work in Anthropology, specifically Native Americans and oral tradition. I went back to school in 2000 and earned 2 degrees, I'm done, I think.

As for abalone, I've been a diver since I can remember and read everything I could get my hands on plus my own personal experiences. Really there is not much written about abalone. Most of what's there in our language (regular guy's vs. PHD's) all says the same thing. When I read the reasearch papers, seems I look in a dictionary at least twice each page. Otherwise I might fall asleep. Metallurgy and material sciences can be good for insomnia also.

Reading metallurgy is not as sleep inducing as reading the journal Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics (along with a bunch of other physics journals), which I used to do for a living.

Fortunately I'm done with that and have moved on to the thrill-a-minute world of editing high school math textbooks!

Back to the point however...if I have a question about any critter that can be made into a knife scale...I'm coming to you.

Oh! If you liked Dangerous Catch, read The Perfect Storm if you haven't already. Watching the movie doesn't count.

Your a late bloomer like I am. I got my first BS degree in 2000 & in 2002 I completed a BS degree I had started in 1973. Then I was forced to retire due disability in 2004. It don't always make sense!

While I am done with college, I can't stop learning. You are never too old to learn.
I learn something with each knife I make.......................even if it is just patience.

Here's a Marbles Pre-Ban Elephant Ivory Trapper made in Gladstone, Michigan.

Ahh Jim your killing me with that trapper, I have to say a trapper is my favorite of all models (my first knife as a youngster).

I have that model marbles trapper in tortoise shell, I had no idea that they offered this model in elephant ivory, very nice..

Ralph, I couldn't get over the blade design on this knife the was it's beveled at the top. Really beautifully made. The fit and finish are great. Actually, it's the first Marble I own, but not for long. This knife was american made. I have a bunch more knives coming next week.

Here is the set of Exotic Prototypes for the Bulldog Swing Guard with the Lewis and Clark 200 year Memorial etch. The 2 pearls are posted in the pearl post. All of these prototypes have COA's signed by the late Jim Parker.

Though I've had this set for some time, I don't think I posted all of these. This is the only Prototype set I know of for these knives.

Ooops, Bulldog calls all of their Ivory, Mastodon Ivory, not Mammoth.

The last 2 pictures are of a knife that Jeff Jones (Agteacher) customized for me.I think he did a great job with really unusually marked mammoth tooth.

Thanks to all of you. It seemed to me that this set of prototypes has some very high grade handles, much better than I normally see. That piece of mammoth tooth came from ebay, I've never seen another like it, so I got very lucky there and Jeff did a great job!

Got a Northwoods Mammoth Ivory 2 Bladed Hunter today. Last one they had and I think it's a keeper. Beautiful Mammoth Ivory scales.
