The 501 first appeared in the Buck catalog in 1975. The early models had Red Bucarda (linen micarta) handle slabs but I'm not sure when they switched to wood.

Considering that Buck began using date symbols in 1986, your 501 was made between 1975-1985. Red Bucarda handle slabs would narrow the date down to 1975 or possibly a little later.

1981 to 1990 were the official production years. I don't see a dot, so that may be a 1981 build.

I seem to recall that Buck marketed the knife as a Buck 111. It may have been called a Cowboy Dance Knife.

I'm far from an expert on this, so YGWYPF. I'm basing this on information I dug up on a 111 that was gifted to me a few years ago. That knife says Buck 111 USA, no dots

The use of the word "Knives" in the stamp raises questions and should be checked into with the experts. I have not seen where Buck issued this knife with a 110 stamp.

Stamp just doesnt look right!! I havent seen em all but have seen many, none like that??

Jeepergeo is correct...This style of knife was made in 1980 and was stamped 111. The one I have has two dots on either side of the 111. This knife was called the Buck Classic 110, but stamped 111, as noted.

Another thing that throws this knife off is Alfred C. Bucks signature on the blade, and the tang stamp as noted. He very well could have signed it sometime before he died in 1991. Furthermore...this knife "could" be a 'one off' that was made exclusively for a collector.

Your best bet is to contact Buck and ask their historian if they have any knowledge regarding your knife. Send them photos and any questions you may have.
