First time I have seen these two species on the property. I have mixed feelings about the Cowbird. This brown-headed blackbird lays its eggs in the nests of other species. When the birds hatch the rather obtuse victim birds feed the hatchlings which become bigger and stronger than the true heirs which often do not survive. The second photo is of a Brown Thrasher, a common bird but uncommon around this house. Years ago one could see scores of Thrashers during migration in Grant Park in Chicago adjacent to Lake Michigan.

The brown headed black birds or cow birds made their first appearance at my feeder this year. Like you said, mixed feelings.

The brown-headed cowbirds usually show up at feeders here here in late winter along with flocks of red-wing blackbirds. Starlings usually show up about the same time. They can empty a large feeder really quick.

I sit on the back porch with my pellet rifle and selectively "lead poison" all the starlings and cowbirds I can. Red-wings get a pass. After several are dispatched they catch on and flyaway for a while but come back in a few minutes. After a few days of this they leave and don't return until next year. Don't know if they wise up or would have just moved on anyway.

Recently we're getting a few purple finches at our feeders. Beautiful birds - got this picture off the internet cuz I can't take one that clear. Looking forward to the arrival of scissor-tail flycatchers - IMHO the most beautiful of our birds here. Usually start seeing them in May.

Have had a few male house finches show up, one time a female painted bunting. And the last two springs a sharp shinned hawk has decided that my bird feeder is a bird feeder and usually makes a couple of kills.

MRWatch, you probably have more stuff than they do. Enjoy. Hope your son is still improving.

I have never seen so many sharp objects. Found a few goodies. Needed the knife pick as my nails are about shot. My son has not heard yet about possible chemo. Taking some short walks and trying to get a handle on the pain med so it won't make him dizzy . Does not want to leave the house because the seat belt goes across the surgery points. And not around people that may give him a bug.

Gonna be a bumper crop of peaches, apples, pears, and plums here this year. The past two years a late frost ruined most of the fruit crop. This year we had a good cold winter (enough chilling hours) and no late frosts, the result being a really heavy fruit set. Consequently I've spent countless hours thinning the fruit.

Here's one of the plum trees. The fruit you see here averages about the diameter of a nickel. I need to thin to about 5 or 6 inches between plums.

The second picture is of culled plums on the ground under the tree.

The most painful summer I ever spent as a teenager was "tipping" 40 acres of plum trees that had set a really heavy crop. Tipping consisted of walking down the rows and cutting the ends of heavily laden branches before they broke using a pair of long-handled pruning shears (smaller branches) and a folding tree saw (larger branches & branches that had already broken). At the end of each day I literally could not raise my arms. To avoid the 105 degree heat in the middle of the day, we would start at 6 AM, work for about 4 hours, then come back at 5 PM and work for another 2 hours. It was brutal. It was also the BEST motivation to get me to do well in school so I could get the heck off the farm by going to college. I miss living on a farm, but I do NOT miss working on a farm!
