zzyzzogeton wrote:Down here in Texas, there are many people who throw used toilet paper away in the trash rather than flushing it down the toilet. Most of them are like me - live in a rural area and have septic tanks. My family has been disposing of used TP in the trash since 1975. Sure reduces the frequency they need to be pumped.

The worst things to put in a septic tank, in decreasing order of negativity is
1- anti-bacterial cleaning solutions
2- grease from frying pans
3- ground up food through a garbage disposal unit or uneaten food down the toilet
4- toilet paper

The only thing that should go into a septic tank is what goes in your mouth.

Toilet paper has gotten better over the years with some specifically being made to be "septic tank safe".

You can test how "septic friendly" your TP is with a little experiment.

Put 4 sheets of TP in a sealable plastic container. Fill the container about 2/3 with water, seal and shake for about 10 seconds. The longer it takes to dissolve, the harder it is on your septic tank. Scott's dissolves very quickly. Charmin will take forever. We choose to not make my little collection of bacteria work on the cellulose in the TP. Even bacteria "poop" in that they leave waste behind. Any TP digested by the tank bacteria gets "pooped out" into your tank by the bacteria, so it sludges up faster than when TP is NOT flushed.

OH, that those stupid "flushable" scrubbing heads for cleaning toilets???? "Flushable" just means "It will flush through a toilet and not get hung in the toilet drain gooseneck." Sanitary napkins, Tampons and those scrub heads are all "flushable". They are hell on the regular sewage systems and death to septic tanks.

And that is your "Safe and Satisfactory Septic System Operation" training lesson for the week.
Every time I sign in to AAPK I learn something. I did not expect this lesson this morning but find it fascinating. And bacteria "poop" never crossed my mind although as I get older my mind seems full of it. Thanks zz

All I have to say on the subject is I've lived at about a half-dozen places during my life time that depended on a septic tank for bathroom waste disposal (and at about a half dozen more that had a little house out behind the big house). We always flushed the toilet paper and I never had to have a single one of those septic tanks pumped. I am not saying you are wrong. All I'm saying is that has been my experience.

However, my ex-father-in-law had five kids of which four are female and he drilled into them that if they just pee'd, do not flush the toilet paper. Pitch it in the bathroom trash can. Maybe he had a different experience than I did. ::shrug::

If not and it is recycled material, from what? Recycled TP?

I choose the white roll.
I lived in Costa Rica for a year back in the late 60's and I always carried some napkins in my pocket cause such necessities were not always provided.

We put in a new septic system when we bought our place in the country 42 years ago. Never worried about flushing tissue. We have a garbage disposal in the kitchen sink that is connected to the septic waste system, as are the dishwasher and washing machine drains.

The septic system is the old style that has three underground cement tanks connected in series, and drain fields. It's not one of those newer "aerobic" systems that uses an above-ground sprinkler system. Maintenance consists of dumping one or two small dried yeast packets into each toilet once every month or two, and flushing it. That was the recommendation if the old guy that installed the system. He said if we did that we should never need to have it pumped out. One caveat is that most organic kitchen waste goes to the chickens, dogs, or the compost pile, not through the garbage disposal. Also the system was built to support a family but for the past 12 years, except for holidays it's supporting just my wife and me.

Don't know if we're lucky or negligent but the system has only been pumped once, about 15 years ago when the lid to one of the tanks collapsed and caved in. The guy that replaced the lid understandably pumped the system to get out the dirt that had fallen into the tank.

My experience also. Not as many places but I lived in a home for 5 years. It had a metal septic tank and that is supposed to be the worst kind. Always careful about what we flushed but we always flushed our TP. I would occasionally put some yeast in one of the toilets and flush it but that may have just been an urban legend. Anyway, we never had to have the system pumped.

Jerry, how often a tank needs to be pumped is variable.

The frequency is dependent on the size of the tank, the number of people living in the house and what all goes down the drains.

Lots of anti-bacterial cleaners will reduce the efficiency of the tank bugs because they die.

Highly chlorinated water kills the tank bugs as well. (It also causes bread to fail to rise properly.)

Lots of grease will cause a "cap" of grease to form on the surface reducing efficiency.

My parents had 17 rent houses, plus their own system. We never had to pump the tank in the 35 years they lived in the house, but they were on well water and were very picky about what went into their tank.

The rentals were in a small town that routinely overdosed the drinking water with chlorine. Despite advising new renters on what not to use/put in the tanks AND giving them a handout I generated on Septic Tank Care and Feeding, we would still end up having to pump out those rental unit tanks every 2 or 3 years.

We would find grease floating on the surface, tampons, condoms, undigested food that had been flushed down the toilets, toilet paper just sitting there not disintegrating (usually that really soft, cushiony double/triple layer stuff that we specifically told them NOT to use).

Unfortunately, I have way too much personal experience with installing, fixing, pumping out, working with septic tanks. :x

The following chart represents the "typical" frequency for having tanks pumps. Individual mileage may vary.

Eustace maybe the administrator can set up a 'safe place' forum for us to go when we see pictures like that. But I could use a few more castle pictures.

TFL, when we were on Maui we ate the famous Mama's Fish House in Paia. It was very good but crowded and also pricey. We were staying at a B&B and mentioned to the manager where we had eaten and had enjoyed it. He said we should try the restaurant at the Heili'ameili General Store. If we didn't think it is better than Mama's he would pay for our dinner. We went there for dinner the next night. He didn't have to pay!

Try it if you get a chance. It's in a small ranching community at the foot of Haleakala mountain, well worth the trip. ::tu:: https://www.google.com/search?q=heiliam ... %2520Store

We've been been to the crater on a previous trip to Maui, in fact many (MANY) years ago my wife did the bike ride down the mountain. Our daughter has not been up there so we might go see it again this time.

Eustace & Jerry, you better not read this next part...

I just spent the last hour with a very nice young lady that had a grip-strength just short of the she-hulk who gave me a "lomi lomi" massage. And no, boys, it was NOT *that* kind of massage, it was all on the up & up, in fact, my wife and daughter were in the adjoining rooms enjoying the ministrations of their own she-hulks.

If you have never had a proper massage, I highly recommend it, just don't plan on being good for anything immediately afterwards!
