treefarmer wrote:Ken, Grulla is a new name to me. Had to look it up, a Southwestern term for a dun colored horse. I assume the two "ll"s are pronounced as a "y"?

My wife had a grey dun with the dark dorsal stripe and the tiger stripes on the shoulders, he was pretty horse.

Yes, usually pronounced like "y", but I've heard it both ways. There's a lot of words of Mexican Spanish origin used in Texas and the Southwest. We're pretty good at "Anglisizing" them.

That grey dun with darker back and legs, often with the tiger stripes on the darker shoulders and legs would be a classic example of a grulla.

Our annual invasion of migrating flocks of robins and cedar waxwings has arrived. They were all over the birdbath this morning, to the chagrin of our resident mockingbird who constantly guards it and tries to chase away other birds.

Some of the robins are year around residents here but the beautiful and comical looking cedar waxwings are only here for a couple of weeks. They strip the berries off the hollies, cedars, and other plants that have berries, and then move on.
I tried to take pictures of them through the window but the camera in my phone wanted to focus on the window screen in the foreground, so the birds were out of focus.

For your enjoyment here are a couple of cedar waxwing pics I lifted off the internet.

Mr. Watch, Painting is a great talent to have. It must provide you with hours of satisfaction. A balanced life needs some creative expression.

John, I used to know a fellow who would take old tree roots, remove the bark, polish them and shape them with a chain saw.
They sold for thousands of dollars, most often as coffee tables.

The inscription behind the fountain reads:
"Wind blows our footsteps - first the passions, then the time devours us. This fountain is built, because the stone is more durable than we are, and the water is eternal..."

That one stump looks like a hunter draped across a rotten stump. Weird, somebody could really do something macabre with that one.
Cedar waxwings are truly beautiful birds.
Everyone’s artistic expressions are very nice. We are, indeed, a diverse and amorphous group.

Eustace who is that in relief on the fountain? The letters look Cyrillic, the sentiment sounds Russian.

Hi, Steve,
Lazar Donkov is a Bulgarian artist from the town of Gabrovo. Creator and first director of this place:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etar_Arch ... ic_Complex
in Bulgaria there is an old custom, in the memory of a man or an event to build a fountain.
And about Russian sentiment - you are just used to connecting Cyrillic with Russia.
Cyrillic was created in Bulgaria by the Bulgarian scientist Kliment Ohridski at Preslav Literary School at the end of the 9th century. From Bulgaria at the end of the 10th century Kievan Russ accepts Christianity and the Cyrillic alphabet.
