Phil, there is a coal fired steam power plant West of Birmingham and there is a four track rail system going into it from the North. I've never crossed those tracks when all four did not have coal car trains sitting on them. That place must consume a wealth of coal.

They still make rat shot in 22, 357 and 45.

I used to carry a .22 9 shot Taurus loaded with rat shot when working in the barns for dispatching rattlesnakes.

About 3 years ago, after pulling back a hay bale and waking up a 66 inch rattler, I emptied the Taurus, hitting the rattler every time.

Alll I had then was a very pissed rattler. I had to go Conan the Barbaian on him with the chopping hoe I use to pull back each bale, choking up to about 4 feet since a full length overhead swing would hang up in the rafters.

Now, I carry a 357 loaded with a single round of rat shot followed by 5 of hollow point.

I'm not even sure anybody still makes rat shot. I do remember seeing some when I was a boy that was made just like paper shot shells.

A few years ago during the Obama great ammo scare when you couldn't find rat shot in any caliber. Couldn't find most other common pistol or rifle ammo either. Local gun store owner told me ammo manufacturers were so busy filling orders for regular ammo they weren't making any rat shot. Since then I've been dispatching vermin with a pellet rifle. Haven't looked for any rat shot recently.

If I weren't asleep at the switch I could have gotten a pic of 3 Bluejays.
Haven't seen or heard them since then.
It's supposed to drop down below freezing on Monday and Tuesday.
Texas (at least my part of Texas) wasn't made for below freezing.

I've never heard it called "rat shot". We always called it birdshot or snakeshot. The 22 shotshells were birdshot, and .38 was snakeshot. My first rifle was a Remington 580 Smooth Bore single shot 22 (which I still have). My Dad bought it for me when I was 10 to shoot sparrows & blackbirds in our tractor barn. The birds were crapping on his tractors and that annoyed his greatly. His idea was that the 22 shotshells wouldn't punch holes in the barn. He was correct, however forgot about what a 22 shotshell does to large lightbulbs used to provide light inside the barn...

gino,
What a nice looking and inviting table!
I'm interested in the seven fish bonanza, what all is on the table? I do see the big platter of shrimp and some bread for sure!. ::tu:: My wife says there maybe a chowder in the place settings. Is this a family tradition ? Makes me hungry.

Taken at a friends house. Am thinking it is a Screech Owl trying to get a little warmth from the sun's brief appearance. He didn;t vocalize which would help with the I.D.

bighomer, Thanks for the interesting photos. You are getting more diversity with the birds than I am.

QS I do not have many but the diversity isn't bad. Several different woodpeckers and a few carolina wrens visit and doves of course, but I've not seen a crackle or brown headed cowbird this winter and that's unusual. Even the starlings are smaller in numbers, the flocks generally number in the hundreds if not more, this year a flock of 25 or 30 is the biggest I've seen, and not many that big. ::shrug::

bighomer 2 or 3 weeks ago, over a neighbor's field, I saw a great flock of starlings. Easily several thousand; they were doing one of those spectacular ariel ballets twisting and turning, separating and recombining in perfect union. They act so instantaneously that it is like they become one huge organism instead of thousands of individuals.

I do have lots of sparrows. I only had one house finch show up for two days. As I remarked previously last winter I had a dozen or so hang around for months. Philco evidently has a lot of them.
