Seriously, great find on a great old knife! If they could only talk …

Nice old cattle knife! It could tell a story or two! George Schrade company was in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It was totally unrelated to Schrade Cutlery Company (or Schrade Walden) of Walden, New York. I can't read your tang stamp, but if it is a Walden knife, and the tang stamp is in an arch, it MAY pre-date 1918 (or be close to thereabouts). The jigging is certainly not a latter-day style.Bert wrote:John Primble: India Steel Works
Old and worn, but rescued and patched. I think this may be up to 100 years old. Made by Geo. Schrade, Walden N.Y. The punch has Pat. No. 701.878 stamped on it. Schade made these for hardware stores Like Belknap Hardware and Hibbard Spencer Bartlett Co. Found at estate sale, $1.00

Thank you for the information, I had googled the patent number and came up with scant results, but Schrade was mentioned as a primary maker of John Primble labeled knives. I have begun to read about Geo. Schrade, he has a long and complicated history. I'll need to read more to understand his and his brothers companies. I like the bone on this knife, it's worn very smooth. Would like to see what the full blades looked like. Someone sure used it often. Thanks again. Berttongueriver wrote:Nice old cattle knife! edit: Now I see your tang stamp. Several companies made knives for Primble hardware company.
