Re: WHAT ARE YOU CARRYIN RIGHT NOW? WHAT IS YOUR FAV EDC?
Decided to carry one today that felt a bit too dullish for my liking and so I had to take a minute and strop it back into shape. Since I had the strop out I picked out a few others from the rotation pile to touch up too. Stropped them all into shape for my liking and some took more work than others. But I noticed that the Schrade 8 OT and 61 OT, as well as the Robeson 626240 were by far the easiest to get back into shape, took the least time and effort to get them to shave hair again. Many years ago, before I ever even owned a Schrade, I read somewhere in these forums that Schrade steel was the easiest to sharpen and best to hold an edge compared to other carbon steels or 1095 anyway. I didn't know what they were talking about because I had never had one or experienced how they were to sharpen and keep up. Picked up several Schrade over the years and I can only say that in my mind the old wise ones were right, or at least right for the most part. I don't own all the brands of carbon steel out there so I won't say Schrade's version is the best end all be all. I will say that of the few brands and blades that I own with 1095 steel, the Schrades seem to be the easiest to touch up or even sharpen and put an edge on to begin with. Robeson comes in a close second. Wouldn't surprise me if their steel came from the same foundry. And I can't explain why but they seem to keep that edge longer than the other brands I use. Can't explain it and don't know who made these old batches of 1095 for Schrade Cut Co, Walden era, the Schrade USA era, and the old Robesons but I do love the steel. My favorite steel to deal with and keep sharp and takes great color in the patina. Your results may vary.

Iman, thanks for your observations. Personally, I would like to see more member reports of their experience with different steels or brands.
