All About Pocket Knives

I went to the little local flea market yestiddy, didn't find any knives that floated my boat but did feed another of my several accumulating problems as sweet thang calls them.

Greg I have a whole series of those Foxfire books. I agree, lots of good reading there. They tell a lot of old time ways of doing things like preserving food, building a cabin, making a quilt, tanning animal hides, etc., etc.

The Foxfire books were the inspiration of a high school teacher in rural Appalachia and were compiled by students who interviewed old folks in the area.

Would be interesting to know what those original students did with their lives.

Quick Steel...those shots remind me of playing in the irrigation ditch at my Grandpa's farm when I was a kid. Good ol' summertime memories of better days.

Mad Hungarian...that old Jaguar is a classic. I worked at a British auto salvage yard when I was in high school and used to cruise around upstate NY searching through the weeds in overgrown fields and looking in and around old barns for cars like that to buy and salvage parts from...well, the cars I was looking for weren't in as good shape as that one...but it wouldn't surprise me if that one had some parts in/on it that I salvaged from other jags.

Found this fat fella on the back porch last night. Used to have a lot of them here 20 years ago but rare nowadays. Some theorize imported fire ants kill the young toads.

Come around my place, they sing all night long, sometimes it's so bad you can hea them inside with the windows closed.

The Texas Hill Country is blessed with water. Here are some pictures of Comal Springs in New Braunfels, TX. New Braunfels is at the Eastern edge of the hill country and the spring is where an underground river comes through the balcones escarpment. The Comal River is the shortest river in the US. The sign says Comal Springs is the largest spring in the Southwest. There are several point of egress for the water in addition to what these pictures show.

Very Interesting! We have many, many springs in Florida and each is a thing of great beauty.

Interesting that Comal Spring is the largest. I'd have guessed one of the other more famous springs like Barton Springs, San Solomon Springs, or Aquarina Springs were larger. The Texas Hill Country is famous for its springs and crystal clear spring fed rivers. The numerous resulting swimming holes, fishing, canoeing, and other recreation they provide are a special part of the Hill Country's beauty.

Jerry, not sure if you were living in the area back then but one of the oldest breweries in Texas, Pearl Brewing Company, was based in San Antonio and advertised their beer as being "From the Country of 1100 Springs". The brewery is no longer operating but Miller bought the rights and is still selling beer under the Pearl name. I haven't heard that advertising slogan in years.

Ken, The Pearl Brewery has undergone a very nice gentrification and is a really nice place to visit. It is on the north end of the San Antonio Riverwalk. The complex has transformed into very nice restaurants, condo/apartments, and the Hotel Emma which is the cornerstone of the development. The main brewery facility became the hotel. They kept the industrial feel of the brewery which makes it a unique place. I'm really impressed with what they have done to revitalize that area of San Antonio. I much prefer visiting the Pearl Brewery complex over the downtown part of The Riverwalk.

Thanks Jerry. It's been several years since we've been to San Antonio but it's always been one of my favorite cities. It's like New Orleans, San Francisco, Boston and a few others that have a unique atmosphere and culture unlike anywhere else. I drank many a bottle of Pearl Beer "back in the day" - used to cost $2.59 for a case of 24 returnable bottles! Here's what the brewery looked like years ago. It's great they were able to re-purpose that grand building and the architecture. I'll have to save up my nickels and stay there next time I'm in San Antonio. Or maybe just go by for a visit - from the looks of it, I could buy several knives for what it would cost to stay there.

Ihad alittle down time today so I took a little walk up to The Gilroy Historic District to see If I could find some pocket knives. Didn't find any good ones but it is a quaint little town.
