All About Pocket Knives

How about old hand tools, i dont really collect them but pick them up if cheap from markets when i see them, iv had this old stanley hand drill for a few years and have even used it a few times, ive got many more old tools,

Very nice Paul, there's a few tools laying around here, any guesses to what i used the wooden block for?

Went to our local trade day ths week-end and bought a bunck of junk. Thought you might like to see what I bought. Payed $45.00 for all of it. Maybe I didn't get stung TOO bad...
Knives, hammers, clamps, all kinds of stuff.
The molding/dado plane is a Wards #45. It came with 14 different blades.
The Masonic pin back is very cool. It's 3&1/4" long.
The wooden hub rotary brushes are made from pure chungking and will fit on the tapered spindles on my Baldor polishing motor.
That "thing" in the bottom pic is a puzzler. It is marked "Graef&Schmidy/ Germany" and "patent applied for". There's a "V" shaped spring that runs from the pivot to the ends. It locks like a hemostat. I'm not sure if it was made to cut, or not. On one side, it has an opening, almost like a pair of wire cutters. Anybody got any ideas??? I'll bet T.J. does!!(LOL).

Bill, ya got more pictures of the whacha-ma-callit? From just what I can see of it, it looks like a curling iron for a 20's era wavy hairstyle.

I would call them shears. When something was cut with them, the flat band of metal on the one side grasped the "cutoff".
And the wire cutter looking thing at the pivot is.................. is very useful.

Now that I see more pictures, I agree with Joe. Looks like a cut and hold device.

Some of you Guys are just TOO danged smart. That weird thing does have a cutting edge and it DOES hold the cut piece. I can't imagine who would use such a thing but it makes perfect sense.

Who can tell me the best way to refinish the stacked leather handle on the Estwing hammer in the top photo. I know SOMEBODY will know.

It's a "jewel" from a Masonic Lodge and represents a level.

Jerry, We use the long skinny plugs that you push in from the outside without deflating or removing tyre.
You have a tool like a awl shaped rasp you poke in hole to remove and clean the hole, then thread the plug,
( looks like a peice of gluey rope ) onto tool with slot in end push thru hole till it enters inside of tyre, twist
tool sideways and remove. Good in the bush but not legal on steer tyres. Only use them till you can get to
a tyre place although they will last the life of the tyre. Most tyre places use the ones you mentioned but like you
say you have to remove tyre first.

That is definitely $45.00 worth of goodies. The plane alone will sell for more.

We do have those kind of plugs. I remember years ago, plugging a tire in the K-Mart parking lot. I plugged a front tire (is that what you're calling a "steer tire"?) on my '88 Chevy Cavalier and ran it that way for 30,000 miles. That's what made me say they last forever. Hair of a lot easier than pulling the tire off the rim and in some cases, you don't even have to pull it off the car.

Jerry, it is a medallion signature of office for a Senior Warden in a
Masonic Blue Lodge. The Senior Warden's jewel is the Level...symbolizing
that all Masons meet on the level, without regard to social, political or
religious beliefs or status.

The Senior Warden of a Masonic Lodge is the second in command within the
Lodge Officers. In the absence of the Worshipful Master, the Senior Warden
assumes the Worshipful Master's duties. The Senior Warden of a Masonic Lodge
sits in the West (symbolic of the setting sun) and assists the Worshipful
Master in opening and closing the Lodge.

The Senior Warden is in charge of the Lodge when it is at labor. His
position is similar to a Vice-President of any organization.

His ancient duties were to pay the Craft (the members of the guild) their

Well because of the offset ..... I would guess to gauge something. ....maybe door frame...or molding .

Looks like the bottom of the two blocks is "let in" or "morticed out" a bit on the edge. Funny description, but it looks like it has been worked, no?

Your best tools there are your very nice compass and bevel square, I think.

I'm going with JohnnieR on this one. It's a gauge/jig but the possible purposes are too many to contemplate.

Johnnie....We have a WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The block has a 1/4 inch offset. It was to be placed on a window or door jamb, then marked with a sharp pencil to gauge proper placement of casing.

I was a house painter for 17 years. ....been around a lot of new construction and remodeling. My Parents also had 35 Mobile Home rentals scattered in 4 different M.H.Parks...guess who did their maintenance?

We need to start a thread and call it "name that tool"....

Old guy i worked for in the late 70's would go behind ya and check your jambs with a Nickle-I always just used the blade of a speed square to gauge with after they came around before that you'd set your T-square @ 3/16"

Johnnie....I'm glad that was you working on those 35 rentals and not me. We remodeled several hundred government homes years ago, after that it was all new construction for me

Pigsticker........I made the blocks small enough to fit in a tool belt. I handed them out to all the guys to keep them from having to use a tape measure or adjust their t-square. They could mark both sides of the corner at once. We had jigs set up for everything. Dummy door knobs, curtain rods, cabinet knobs, tp holders,closures,handrail brackets, you name it.
