All About Pocket Knives

John, Boker did a series of knives handled in wood salvaged from beer barrels some time back. I guess those white oak barrel staves might work well for handles. It would sure add to the cool factor.

Jerry when I started buying Weller it was on the bottom shelf with the Ancient Age and Old Granddad and was priced comparably. It's only been in the past few years that the price has crept up while the availability has diminished. Weller's recipe is very similar to the Pappy Vanwinkle formula and now Weller has gained in stature among bourbon reviewers resulting in drastically increased demand. I can rarely find any for sale now days. I'll agree with you on the Buffalo Trace, not my cup o tea either.

I have some scraps of broad leaf maple burl, might make a fine knife handle or scales? Would they neewd to be stabilized? Here is one of my turnings. Bob

Pappy Van Winkle is expensive stuff (10 year old and up). I sure as heck can't afford $650 - $3,000+ a bottle for that stuff. I'll just stick to my bottom shelf bourbon with an occasional treat of a bottle of Four Roses Yellow Label.

I'm spending my bourbon money on knives these days so I haven't had a taste of anything since the first of the year.

I bought this little show case with a glass shelf at an antique mall several years ago. It may have been tagged as a knife display case. The side glass has the remains of red paint at the top and why the holes in the top? 14 inch wide by 18 inches tall at the front. I may display some rocks and fossils in it if she let's me. We've had a couple pair of geese show up in our pond in front of the house recently.

I had to come to a complete stop today to allow a momma and her eight goslings followed by one very proud poppa to cross the road on their way to a pond.

Had a cement bridge laid over the creek at the edge of the property.

That mailbox seems to be overflowing with knives nice concrete work whoever did it

The job was done by a local team: father, son, and another one of his small crew. They enjoy an excellent reputation. And the work came in several hundred dollars under estimate. There was indeed a knife awaiting me in the mail box.

Barn swallow nest on the back porch. First that have nested there in years. I would have knocked down the nest before they completed it but was out of town for several days. When we returned it was built and already had eggs in it so left it. They fledged the nest shortly after I took this picture.

The news blurb accompanying that picture stated that the infant was stunned but recovered. The photo was meaningful to me because within my lifetime many biologists maintained that animals did not experience anything parallel to our feelings, i.e. every response was purely instinctive, sort of automatic, not indicative of feeling. I always thought this was nonsense. Have you ever seen those photos of a dog curled up by the coffin of his fallen human?

If only human beings were as compassionate with other human beings as they are with members of what we consider "the animal kingdom".

I think they are as compassionate; It's just not the kind of thing that gets "in the grape vine".

By cutting away some lower branches, mostly dead ones, from these trees I created the main feeding station for our ground feeding/seed eating birds. A huge success during the winter and early spring, it receives fewer visits now that "...the living is easy..." Birds are much more comfortable feeding near shrubbery or trees where they can promptly flee should a predator approach.

A lone Red-Winged Blackbird, several types of Sparrows, Mourning Doves; these are the main visitors now. The Red-Wing spends a couple of hours a day under the trees.
