We had this little creature in our yard today curious about our guinea fowl. I believe it to be a Leucistic Peahen. Occasionally, peafowl appear with white plumage. Although albino peafowl do exist, this is quite rare and almost all white peafowl are not, in fact, albinos; they have a different condition called leucism which causes an overall reduction in different types of pigment. This can result in the complete lack of coloration of their plumage, while preserving normal eye colour. By contrast, true albino peafowl have a complete lack of melanin, resulting in the albino's characteristic red or pink eyes. Leucistic peachicks are born yellow and become fully white as they mature. Our guineas were making quite the racquet.

I was looking out of the kitchen window this evening and saw something moving across our field, quite a distance away. Couldn't make it out until I used binoculars. Then I went out and photographed my first snapping turtle. He turned to face me, whichever way I moved.
Which reminds me when I arrived in KY and was turning in my UHaul truck I met the Turtle Man inside. Some of you might have seen his former TV series. His personality off camera was the same as on.

Looks like the wildlife is active in many parts of the country. I have had many visitors in my yard and on my back porch this Spring.

QS you may not know it but if that thing clamps down on your finger it won't let go till it thunders, my momma told me that when I was about six or seven. My dad love to catch one kill it and clean it, he claimed they had seven different kinds of meats, ( tastes like) chicken pork fish etc etc they just tasted good to me. In the mid '70's my wife and I and mom and dad went fishing at a old mill dam and we caught two big one's along with a nice mess of fish, dad and I wrestled them into the trunk of the car and when we got home my wife help dad clean those turtles while I cleaned the fish. It was a hot nasty stinking job and needlessly to say she never ate a bite of those turtles and she still talks about the day she and my dad cleaned them stinky turtles.

Thanks for the heads up bighomer. Fortunately I have long known about the snapping turtle by reputation at least. And I know they can get considerably bigger than my visitor.

When we were younger, more than 1/2 a century ago, living in the "old" Orange County Florida (before Disney) we hunted and fished with a family that would butcher the soft shell turtles. They were always good to eat and I remember they had both dark and white meat on them. My old dad didn't mess with turtles, he just fished for fish, so I never learned enough about turtles to become a connoisseur. If we had eaten more turtle maybe we wouldn't be goin' to the doctors so much.
As big homer mentioned, them snappers will bit you, as quick as lightenin'!
Our fawns are still are still several months away as the rut is so late in our area. I really enjoy watching them play in the food plots, quite often they still have spots when our rifle season starts. That is a great picture, Ralphalsip!

Just a few minute ago, we had a Chevy Trailblazer catch fire,in front of my house ( on Hwy.246 ) --- folks in it, got out alright, but the vehicle looks to be ""GONE"

Our house is about 200ft. off the hwy. and was in no danger, --- but when one of the tires exploded,my wife moved faster than I have seen her move in 20 years

A man I worked with said that snapping turtle hunters carried a Bic lighter in each shirt pocket in case you get hung onto. Hold the flame under it's neck and it will let go.

Quick Steel here's yours little brother that was in the edge of a soybean field yesterday I was checking on.
They get out a lay eggs this time of year. I have come across them several times over the years in the open backed into a hole they had dug to fill with eggs.

A fella I went to Viet Nam with lives in S.E. Michigan and loves to eat cooter. (fresh water turtle that's not a snapping turtle)

What is the history of it? Looks like a marker in the bottom photo.
Old ruins in the woods are always amazing, to think what folks did many years ago. In one of our local creeks there is a large amount of concrete work that once supported a water powered sawmill built in the 1890s. I'm pretty sure the chimney/fire place is much older that that.
