I sure do remember license plate key tags, but don't remember who sent them out I believe in expectation of donations

Grump is on the right track, they are key tags That were given to you by the DMV when you registered your car. The number on the tag matched the actual number on your license plate. It came in real handy when you went into a mall or store and forgot your headlights on and someone came on over the intercom rattling off a license plate number of said vehicle. Of course none of this is necessary now that we have "smart" vehicles, which turn the lights off if you forget them on!
Also if you lost your keys that were attached to the tag someone could turn them into the police and the keys could be returned to you.

I remember those coming in the mail, but not from the DMV.
I want to say they were sent by The Community Chest, American Legion or VFW or something like that and they were asking for financial support.
Our parents put them on their key chains and if I remember correctly, if they lost the keys, whoever found them could drop them in a mail box and they would be returned.
I'd bet there are people that collect those big time.
They were around for many years, for every State and sent to just about every registrant in the country

I remember them but not where they came from or when they stopped sending them. Seems to me like they disappeared in the '60s but I could be dead wrong.
Edit: Guess I should have turned to my old friend Google before posting.
"The Disabled American Veterans(DAV) purchased The ident-o-tag company in 1941. License plate keychain tags were used since 1938.
The New York based "Lost Key Services" was among the first. There were other advertising tags used too, but you had to order the tags. The DAV was able to get the various state motor vehicle departments to co-operate with them and give them the mailing lists of the people who registered their cars. The DAV mailed tags with your license plate number on them and asked for a donation. The premise was that if you lost your keys, the finder would drop them into a mail box, and the DAV would return them to you.
The program continued from 1941 through 1975, and was ended because of a "right to privacy rule."

I remember my parents getting them in the mail. Also the motels and hotels had tags on the room keys in case you forgot to leave them. Drop in any mail box. many did not!

I remember those little tags. I wish they still sent them out. They would be handy when I'm traveling and check into a motel. Seems they always want your license tag number at check in.

Did you notice the name of the street that Utica Cutlery factory resides upon?
Had I been aware of it in 1988, my collecting might have taken a completely different path.

Does that mean their reservoirs have filled back up and they are no longer under drought conditions?

Jerryd I went by the San Luis Reservoir up on152 and it is as full as I have seen it in 6 years but but still not up to the high water mark so I guess they are still under drought conditions.

Ahh, good ole route 152. Years ago (like 30 years give or take) they had a sign on the side of that highway indicating the number of fatalities that year on that road with revolving numbers like a slot machine. not kidding. Was a dangerous road in those days. Traveled it a few times. That road looked nothing like it does today.
EDIT: hauling Garlic by chance Greg for the garlic capital of the world that is Gilroy? Coming back thru Winnemucca? I have some knives with your name on it. I will give you an "in hand look". Drive safe my friend.

Hey Jerry A. good to hear from you my friend. I had to go to Santa Clara so I went across 152, stopped at Casa de Fruta and had a burrito and a glass of pomegranate wine and spent the night there. Then went to Santa Clara Sunday morning. Found a good load down in Oxnard so I went down 101 and got to see all that pretty coastal scenery. Those pics are Refugio beach up above Santa Barbara. Won't make it by Winnemucca this time, headed back to Jacksonville, Fl. but you know me I am always up for looking at some knives.

Next time my friend.
For us road warriors. Johnny Cash/ I've been everywhere man. Love the reference to my town I live in first in the song. Actual pics of Winnemucca in that youtube video. Been to some of those other places he mentions. Some many times unfortunately. Nice places but not home. Road life sucks but it is what it is.

It's wildflower season in the Texas Hill Country. This picture is just North of a town named Fredericksburg, TX. The flowers in the picture are bluebonnets and not a very impressive stand of them. I posted the picture because the landscape with large granite outcrops in this part of Texas reminds me of the Prescott, AZ area. Limestone is the predominant rock found in the Hill Country.
