I thought I'd post this up. I had originally taken it for the Old Stockman Knives thread, but '88 is much newer than my standard for "old" so it got cut. It's a safety award for the regional branch of Norfolk Southern, the Pocahontas Division, which is located in Bluefield, WV. The yard and offices are about 15 minutes from my house.

There was a whole series of these. Most had names of 1950s era passenger trains, but this one, dated 1988 has the various railroads that, as of 1988 had merged to form Norfolk Southern (Conrail had not yet been purchased in '88); as well as a Boker Trapper from the 1990s (I can't recall if it was dated), a cheap unbranded lockback, and a Leatherman (undated). All the '80s knives were SC505s.

Crocus finish on bolsters is pitting. The foam Schrade used in the '80s wrecks knives if not removed. This is the worst damage I'd seen. The green stuff came off with silverware polish but left these ugly marks.

These are some follow up pics. from my previous thread of Victorian Railways grain hoppers. These were originally for general freight, then some were fitted out to carry grain. The inside of the wagon was welded so there were no gaps, as they were red in color a yellow stripe was painted at the end of the wagon to indicate they could carry grain, then later all that were made grain compliant were all painted yellow. These could only carry 22 tons compared to 55 tons of the new ones.
GY carriage 1978, you can see the yellow stripe painted on the end of the wagon. GY carriage with a tarp, all grain wagons had to be covered. When carrying coal, general freight or machinery did not have to tarped. Gy wagon painted yellow

Thanks gents, i just love history of railways, particularly the old Victorian Railways, but rail history from any country. Always scouring the TV guide looking for any shows or doco's on rail history from any country. Some fantastic stuff being posted about American rail and it's history.

Got some pics of a BNSF coal train, a few days ago at a rural crossing. The pusher loco was still in the paint scheme used prior to the current one. I think I prefer the older one with the yellow lettering.

Those loco's just ooze grunt.

Nice BNSF! I have a Lionel Santa Fe diesel, blue and yellow, from the pre-merger days with Burlington Northern. Come to think of it, my dad had a Tyco Burlington diesel in the red with white stripes and gray roof paint scheme.

Great modelling skills. Everyone, don't be afraid to post model trains. They are after all part of a Train Enthusiasts passion.
