I went through my bird book and I think it's a female White-Winged Crossbill.

Thanks Charlie but it doesn't have the crossbill. Its beak is small like a sparrow's. Also the coloring is a little off. I have gone through several good bird books and nothing so far matches. It answers to the sound of a Harris sparrow but the coloring is off from that too. My sister-in-law played a bunch of bird sounds on her phone.___Dave

Dave - Did you consider the Baird Sparrow? The yellow bill is throwing me off.

She doesn't have the crown and she has too much color. We had cedar waxwings nest outside one of our windows where we could watch them and they really are a gorgeous bird. ___Dave

A non-breeding female snow bunting can have a lot of brown according to my Peterson guide. But the white patches should still show when in flight.

QS put a picture in "First Cup Diner" where I also asked about this bird and he nailed it. Thank you for solving my two year mystery. The picture in the two bird books I've been consulting and that didn't serve me well showed a much different picture. She is a non-breeding female so she is young and could hang around for a while. Beautiful snow bunting, probably wants out in that snow, habitat is artic tundra, breeds farther north than almost any other land bird. Goes south to Ore. to Pa. For the winter. Often called " snowflake". Probaly more info than you want.

My second cousin has a boy named Matthew. I call him Gunny because his dad was a Marine and when Matt was just a tad, he had a hard assed stare just like a Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant.

Yes, he does have an ornery streak in him and has since birth. Even at seven years old he's contrary as a hog on ice. He's not dumb by any stretch of the imagination but his mother and grandmother (my cousin) have to battle with him to get his homework done. My cousin would like to think she's the one who gets the most out of him but it's really grandpa for whom he toes the line.

My great grandfather, had a Howard gold pocket watch that he acquired around 1900 and it was handed down to me, through my grandfather and father. I still have it to this day, and have it serviced periodically. What is interesting, is I have a photo of him holding it in his hand, right around the end of WWI.

Thanks Tommy. Sometimes they're a problem on the roads, especially at night. They have to have blinking red lights but you come up on them unexpectedly on the back roads sometimes.

...my oldest son lives near Monterey, tenn. and there is an amish community near his place.....he got me a cover made for my old boy scout hatchet there and it's a work of art!!..... .........

They do a lot of general construction work and build furniture around here in addition to farming. One guy had a herd of camels he used for milk. I used to pick it up, he shipped it all over the country. I was always hoping he'd hitch one of those camels to the buggy but he never did.

Interesting. All of the buggies I've seen were black. Of course, I've not been to that part of PA.

That's interesting. The amish I have seen in oklahoma always drive tractors, never seen a horse drawn buggy. There's a metal building company here that is amish, they use power tools, trucks, the whole nine yards but they still wear amish clothing. I'm honestly not sure how that works with their beliefs, but they sure do great work.
