Alrighty then....
You guys are finding these little jewels and I'm here to confirm your finds..
First off, Mr. Viking Dog, where in the world did you find this jem!!!???
This is one of, if not the first Colonial Barlow's that we ever made!! This baby was made
probably mid to late 30's, and the solid IRON bolster's are proof positive about that!! Solid iron pin assembly was used also....
Before Nickel Silver bolster's were blanked with a monster of a press, they made iron bolster's!! There is nobody alive that remember's how they made them but I'll tell you one thing, they were almost impossible to grind and polish!! The curved Colonial tang stamp is dead give away # 2..And the saw cut smooth bone was used in our Master Barlow and the smaller version you have here...In my book I speak of an old burlap sack of bone I found many years ago in the cellar of Colonial and used it making many of my first knives...
The long pull on the Master blade shows the crude grinding applied that runs right into the swedge at the top of the blade!! This knife is very old my freind and I would make you an offer if I could afford it.
It's actuall value is in the area of 100-150$ Any serious Colonial collector will agree...

Hey Scott, and more importantly HEY JOE!!! So good to hear from you! I've called a few times but no response; I'll call this week some time.....
This is a good example of the pro's we have here; Scott and Joe are the real Mc coy when it comes to Colonial knowledge...
This looks a lot like our # 826, bolster tip shell knife. The master blade is probably just stamped U.S.A.....the surface imprint and tubular rivet assembly is consistant with a Colonial BUT, that pen blade very could be the sign of Prov. Cutlery. The grinding on the pen blade is not really consistant with ours but I think Joe's got this one...
Wicked glad to hear from you Joe....
One more hint; are the blades ground on only one side??

Greetings rhosk!
With an entrance photo like this one, I like you already!!
I can't make out the tang stamp and it could be a Colonial but
I'm thinking more Imperial because of the bolster shape and
solid steel pin assembly...
The handle is a very pretty immitation pearl Celluloid that many
company's used in the 1920's and up...very nice stuff when it's
finished but as I state in my book, when working with it in production,
drilling, hefting, polishing, it was gently applied. They outlawed many
brands years ago because it is highly volital..it burns like gunpowder
when heat is applied!! I have had knives IGNITE in my hands while
grinding the backs or hefting the bolster's!!! Drilling slowly, it would
smoke and we always kept a bucket of water near by..REALLY...
Even 50 years ago, we had to store it out in an individual building..
A small storage cinderblock shed was in the outside yard..
Celluloid..very pretty but dangerous!

I would love to see the tang stamp..

It might be sacrilege but I actually took that knife apart. I don't believe I was the first to do so. The awl blade was to narrow for the spring and the knife did not fit together properly . I'm in the process of making myself an ideal edc out of the parts.I am in Love with the main blade so I took that and the awl and put some new linerless red linen micarta on it with stainless pins.still need to do some adjustments to the pivot pins and some final sanding but here it is.
Its super light and super sharp I love it.

This is an excellent example of what you can achieve if you take your time and
work SLOWLY and CAREFULLY... we all make mistakes and that's just part of learning...
Here is what Mr. Joe (dirt) Keating was able to create with raw parts and material that I sent him....FYI, he made his bolster's from solid brass, and by hand....

I for one, like what you've done with the whole display concept. 20 years ago I would have hired you for your sales potential and your skills!! Nice display, in other words....
I like the whole hardwood and brass combo; around here they don't like guns..I do...Tuff...
I will start at the very top and we see the infamous # 18 casted truck knife!! Nice; we sold millions. It's ad spec. possibility's were endless..The center fixed blade looks a lot to me like one of Colonials first "mass production" full shell fish knife! The # 77 or something in that 7 range..(think I'm close)..a stainless blade and fish scaler to boot!!
Moving right along, This full liner shell knife that we made so many of for ad spec., I forced myself to forget the number!! Very useful little pal with a master blade and screw/bottle opener blade!! Then a # 66 two blade jack knife, made in many colors, and a kind of rare # 1200W for white w/sheild..
Next is a # 392 Barlow..this version has Nickle plate, I never like the plating bit ( read my book), the better one's had at least brass plated liner's and bolster's!!
This next item...I have NO CLUE!! If you can, by a tang stamp or any other proof of it's absolute origin, I would be obviously very interested!!!! nuff of that...
Under that item we have an attractive Colonial LB-95, the brass bolster plated medium size of the gang. The hot die stamp customer's for this was incredible..tons of private L..
Right side, top to bottom....my hands hurt!
A # 492 small jack, a # DC-350 w/light brown stag handles..a #4633, three blade jack.. the 12 blister pack of these was known as the TP-333..carded...
The ole' #S409F fish knife..S for stainless and F for fish...the old men were not complicated men..only their visions were..might want to quote me on that one..(I wrote it down)!..NEXT, or little # 4801 Swiss Master was the baby of the line....and finally,
an OLD # 1405 Swiss Master Utility, and look's like it has seen plenty of action..AND it's still here!! LB-95 sheath at the bottom...

Thanx Bobby these Colonials were very popular and were used hard by the working men in Maine..Heres one for ya my first journeyman gave me this old Colonial when he retired as you can see he rescaled her in wood kinda crude but to me she is beautiful.How old do ya think she is??? To me this knife is PRICELESS

Well guys here is a pile of Colonials I managed to accumulate and hang on to. I am 59 and grew up with a Colonial in my pocket. I can remember the first thing my pals and I would do is take the bail off. We had to make room for rocks I guess. lol We didn't like the feel of a bail in our pocket. I did learn to sharpen with a whet rock and never have took a grinder to a knife so don't blame me for any of those.

Alright, to the best of my knowledge...daddynewton has chosen to display his Colonial collection, and I for one, LOVE it......
From left to right, that ad spec. knife that I can't remember the cat# of but someday I will.
# 392 Barlow and under we see a Colonial RAP 5 Star Series Barlow, # 720, Old Cutler quality Rosewood knife..pics are in my book...
Second pic starts with a # 510 2-blade jack knife w/sheild, and two # 1200 Scout knives,
late 70's on the top one and early 60's for the second one....then, shell jack knife with bolster guard, about 70's and up...
Next we have a page of fish knives; S409 is first, followed by two S409F's, one late 70's, next one early 80's....
Last page is a two blade, very old Celluliod Pearl JK, about mid 40's and next is another old jack, probably late 60's...the very bottom looks to me like a # 923 2 blade Ranger; Delrin handles.....wheeee!!
I do the best I can with my knowledge and ability's to give you gents and gals the most accurate assesment of what you show...
In the 70 or so years in business, Colonial made MILLIONS of knives in HUNDREDS of styles.
I can give you an approximate age and most of the time, a model or catalogue number..
Just the effort you collectors take the time to show these old Colonials means the world to me!!
Thanks a bunch!! I hope I was a bit helpful in your display...any detailed info can be researched through my brain with time...you can't possibly imagine what I saw and did in my 35+ years in a 200,000 square foot manufacturing facility...

Naturally!!
Very nice bigdaddy....Our old # DC-4122, two blade, long pull jack knife!!
These blades clearly call for a horizontal tang stamp; one of only a few designed like this!!
This knife's nick name was "Slim Jim"....an old favorite shell knife and this one's in beautiful shape! Mid 70's and up for this baby. I believe production halted around the mid 80's for one reason or another....
