Done a little tradin' today & came home with this 2004 Browning BAR ShortTrac 270WSM -- ( looks like it was never taken to the woods or even shot much ?? ) __ the Leupold VX2 scope is very, very clear* __ been sorta wanting one of these for awhile & this one worked out for me**
--- may be a little too much recoil, for this Ol' Man to handle, but we'll soon see***
__________ anyone shoot the 270WSM caliper ?? what do you prefer, 130 gr. or 150 gr. ammo ?? ( I seldom / never, have a shot over 100yds. ) -- Monk

Yeah, that pretty much has it. The auto ought to absorb some of the recoil. but with a buck in sight it won't be noticed.

Monk you may be pleasantly surprised with the lack of felt recoil you have with that rifle. My 7MM Mag BAR shoots much easier than my brother's Remington 700 in 30.06. (The Remington used to be mine but I got that Browning and never looked back)

I've owned a Winnie M70 in 270WSM since 2002. Was the 1st regular non-gun magazine hunter to take game with it in South Africa. On that trip, I used the 150gr PowerPoints.big monk wrote:Done a little tradin' today & came home with this 2004 Browning BAR ShortTrac 270WSM -- ( looks like it was never taken to the woods or even shot much ?? ) __ the Leupold VX2 scope is very, very clear* __ been sorta wanting one of these for awhile & this one worked out for me**--- may be a little too much recoil, for this Ol' Man to handle, but we'll soon see***

After that trip, I developed handloads for it, using the 130gr Swift Scirocco and Alliant Reloder 19 powder. Got 3300 fps and unbelievable accuracy. Basically, 5 shots in 3/8" at 100yds.... and it was repeatable.
Fantastic cartridge. Recoil is nothing, in the big scheme of things.
How about a 350lb Black Wildebeest? No problem!

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Monk, you and Philco talkin' about recoil and using the semi-autos, might get me interested in trading for one in .243. I used to hunt with a Rem. 742 30-06, then went to a 700 in 30-06, then backed down to a 700 in .243 maybe 20 years ago. As these old shoulders are deteriorating, a light recoiling .243 BAR might be the ticket. However looking at them on line has cooled my fever, I believe a high dollar recoil pad on my 700 .243 might fit my budget a little better.
Trading for one would be my only way I could justify owning one, and I would hate to get rid of any of my old Winchesters.
CheckSix, that's a might fine group on that target!
By the way, we made some venison sausage this morning thanks to the .243 last New Years Day. We've found that 25 lbs. is about all we can do at a time anymore. So when we run short we dig out about 15 lbs. of venison trim and scraps from the big freezer and buy a 10 lb. Boston Butt and we're in business, 60/40 mix!

I enjoy shooting my BARs** / could not believe the difference in recoil from my Rem.700 bolt guns, to the auto's in same caliper *** -- Phillip, I never had a .243 at all,but the 25-06 in a favorite of mine*
I have got to make sausage soon myself, I tend to do a 70 / 30 mix and only make about 15/16 pounds at a time* -- caught some Boston Butts on mark down last week for .89 pound & have about 6 lbs. of deer burger left from last season, that I need to finish off.
Got my ground blind set up yesterday & trimmed some shooting lanes* -- will be back down there today checking out all the ladder stands, replacing straps/skirts as needed --( this is the second year with my ATV, wow !!!! does it make life better for this ol' man !!! ) -- soon will be time to hunt again, Oct.11 for rifles & ""me""

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
I had the red bag but it got ruined in the flood of '06 so I threw it away. I read somewhere that these old three screw models that haven't been upgraded can go for a chunk of change. I bought mine in (I think) the fall of 1966. For sure, no later than '68.

No, if me or the better half were to sell ours, we know where our other cylinders are, but it seems that a lot of people have sold single sixes....."I have another cylinder, but just don't know where it's at"jerryd6818 wrote:What are you telling us Don? Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Jerry thats my understanding too. Mine is a new model I think I got it in '75. I have a friend who has or had a old model and Ruger tried to get him to send it back for upgrades but he wouldn't do it, sadly he's got early onset dementia , and I have no idea whats happened to his guns and knives. I got the gun belt at the big flea mart in Canton Tex. about 10 years ago.

Anyone who has a three screw can still have the upgrade done if they want, but for a sale they very well might get more for a non upgraded three screw from the right person.......

This one is a 22 LR only but is an Old Model picked it up last year. Have the Bearcat revolver but wanted the larger single six. Both are fun to shoot.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
I've got a Bearcat I traded for way back when I was in high school, sometime in either '63 or '64. The feller I got it from had shot a squirrel and jumped up from where he was sittin' against a tree to retrieve the critter and ended up shootin' himself in the leg. I guess he had cocked the little thing and just made a bad mistake. As soon as he got over his gun shot, the little Ruger was up for trade. Hard to imagine that was over 50 years ago.

I used to have a Ruger Single Six but no longer; nice old handguns. I do have one Ruger Blackhawk OM 3-screw that is all original, this 41 MAG. Love shooting this one, but only shoot handloads as factory ammo is hardly stocked around here and very high priced when you do find it. OH

Those are some mighty fine looking revolvers. Mighty fine! A Ruger single six is on the short list of toys that need to come live at my house.
