I received up a couple of "shallow end of the bay" knives in the mail the other day, a Klien and a little tiny Buck trapper. Just guessing, the Klein Tools is probably a Camillus. The little Buck is from China. However, it is very well made, it is NRA-ILA promotional knife.012.JPG015.JPG

I think that Klein is a Utica-made product. Got the same one in the 2020 POS Exchange, except mine is marked Kutmaster.treefarmer wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 3:30 amNow you're talkin',Mark, great big heavy pocket knives!Madmarco wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 6:50 pm In my box yesterday this very nice made in Japan Parker K404 8 1/2" oal gunstock slip-joint, with delicious butterscotch stag covers and only 1 spear-point blade, to match it's brother "Big Lou" model with white camel bone covers as seen in the bottom picture for comparison! I can say nothing against the Chinese-made Buck traditionals. I gave my grandmother a 379 I got in a lot, and it's seen a lot of rough use, and still goes strong. 420J2 takes a beating and sharpens really easy (provided, you do have to sharpen it a lot).

David, that's a real jewel! Congratulations
Thanks. fellers for the comments on my "low end prizes". Cody, you feel the Klein is a Utica. Do you know if any other companies made knives for Klein?
The little, tiny Buck 380 is well made but way too little to be even practical as a Sunday go to meetin' knife. Mark, it's too little for either one of us.

I was looking at the little Buck again, and it's smaller but not circus midget small, (I'm hoping that's PC?) and might just be ideal for Sunday meetings.
I see it as, anything below 8"-9" open as small but acceptable, anything below 5"-6" open as smaller and nearly unacceptable, and then there's this...c/m small! lol!

I had a huge knife day yesterday, I received 3 knives from 2 separate orders that came at the same time, but instead of posting a group like I've been doing, I'm posting 1 a day because IMHO all 3 deserve a day of their own!
You should like this first one, "Quick" Garry "Steel", and the last picture for comparison should jog your memory as to why!
It's a 9 1/8" oal Parker slip-joint with NS bolsters, brass liners, and weathered camel bone covers, and I was told by the seller whom I have no reason to doubt, that this knife was in the pocket of the Secret Service agent who was assigned to guard Ronny Reagan and was standing beside him the day he was shot in 1981. He went on to say, the same agent again had it in his pocket as he stood and watched the Twin Towers collapse in 2001. I like the story and want to believe it, but, I did the math and the same agent 20 yrs. later...?
Do SS agents even last for 20 yrs., they have an expiry date, no?
If I ever find out I was deceived the knife is going back, after-all, the story is why I pull the trigger the first place!
lol!

Seems like an elaborate story to be made up just to sell a knife. I’d believe him, but, then again, I’m gullible!

You'd probably find most of my carries "small but acceptable" or "nearly unacceptable." I bought an Opinel No. 2 (3.25" open), and I sometimes contemplate the purchase of an Opinel No. 13 (nearly 20" open)...but those, while usable, are the sort of knives I buy for their novelty factor.
Knice pick-ups, David and Mark!

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
Thank you Dan.
Whenever I talk about knives you need to remember that I don't actually put any of mine to work, they are strictly for accumulation and handling/admiring purposes. It might seem like a waste to some folks to have all these knives and not use or carry them, but when I got started accumulating about 3 yrs. ago, it was a conscience decision to do it this way because I knew due to my health my days of carrying a knife on outdoor adventures are behind me, so my interests were/are for their beauty and cool factors.
When I say "acceptable/unacceptable" I'm speaking in terms of EDC's, so my meaning is referring to what would be my choices IF I still carried.
I thought I wanted an Opinel #13, but when I saw one in scale pictures I immediately dropped down to maybe a 10 or 12, and that is just to have one represented in my collection. I must admit I'm not really attracted to them, and that 20" Opinel is too big even for my taste! I already have three, 17"+ knives, an 18" Gil Hibben bowie, and two, 17" Timber Wolf folders, and as you said they are nothing more than novelty conversation pieces.
I could carry any or all of those 3 knives and not ruffle any feathers, but if it was a 2 1/2" keychain novelty auto I'd get arrested, go figure!

This is #2 from a recent acquisition, and every time I glance over at it sitting on the table beside me my first thought is "elegant"!
It's a 7 3/4" oal Paragon lockback with a SS what almost looks like spey blade although my picture doesn't really capture the image, SS frame, no visible pins, and richly grained Cocobolo covers. Made in Seki, Japan.
Direct from Mark at SSk!

Mark, apparently some folks like the Opinel No. 13 for cutting big pieces of meat to barbecue. But for my purposes, an Opinel No. 6 is the way to go for a user. (Of course, that could change if I move or the local law is changed.) Some of mine are there just to be handled and admired, though they could be put to work, and others earn their keep.
And I must say, the Paragon looks great!

Couple of knives for the kitchen. I prefer # 7& 8 for my paring knives, the one with the wooden sheath may open the mail or something, the handle is kinda thin for kitchen use for me.

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
I could see that, Dan, that big ole' #13 would make short order of a slab of meat, but for practicality purposes not so much. Of course, the size of the #13 is what got me cuz of my admiration of big knives, but I guess even I have a limit.
A nice #10 would make a great representative in my collection, and as far as size it's no slouch either, so it's a win-win!
Thanks for the compliment man!

Your Japanese fixed looks perfect for slicing, Big-H, and I like the curved frame on your Opinel, it's a nice change from the standard straight body!
And wooden handles are always nice!

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
The final knife from an order of 3 that I got from Mark at SSk recently, and Mark was kind enough to buy this one from an AAPK seller who doesn't ship internationally and sell it to me!
I've wanted this model as an automatic for awhile, although, everything I read about them being notorious for "peeking" has definitely put a damper on my wanting, so when I got the chance to get a manual, well, what can I say!
As it turns out, the manuals are solid well-built knives likely with similar specs as the autos, but with no catch-hole in the blade it will be nearly impossible for "peeking" to occur!
It's an 8" oal Bonsa non-locking floating swinguard slip-joint that's made entirely of SS, pins and all! I'm a happy camper!
Once again, thanks Mark!

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
Saw what looked like a decent Boker USA stockman last week as we were wading in the shallow end again. The knife still has factory edges, just some tiny scratches maybe from being in someone's pocket. Made my bid and had another one on the way. It arrived yesterday in a nice, padded envelope and was wrapped with paper inside that. The shield was not attached to the knife.
Knowing Boker's "glued on reputation", I only mentioned it to the seller saying, "I assume the shield was on the knife when it was mailed." He assured me it was. I asked what adhesive he recommended, "Any super glue will do", was his response. I can live with that. Otherwise it is a pretty decent knife.
Question: What direction does the shield fit on the knife? I would assume the July 1776 banner would be read as we read a normal Case shield, it'll fit either way.

Nice knives gentleman. David, that Eisenhower is a beauty! Tree farmer same with your Boker! I received a SAK from a gentleman at church. He knows I like pocket knives and this is the fourth one has gifted me. These SAK"S come in handy at times. He collects stamps so I found a zip lock bag full of them and gifted them to him. Good to have and be a friend.

Great stuff everybody. Good landings all. Congrats Marco, treefarmer, dlr110, and all of ya. Love the wooden sheath kitchen knife Homer, that is a cool looker. Nice one Woodwalker, just nabbed one myself, but not for free. Nevertheless, I must say it's about the best 23 bucks I've spent on a knife lately. Got another 10 year old birthday coming up next week and wanted to get them something they will be able to use and keep them interested. This many blades and a good cutting edge should do the trick.

Great knife Iman!! That looks like a Tinker! I cleaned alot of rabbits and squirrels back in the 70's and 80's with a Tinker! Scaled alot of fish with mine as well. Perfect choice for a young man/lady at 10!!! I'm sure they will be pleased!!Ivoryman wrote: ↑Sun May 07, 2023 3:48 am Great stuff everybody. Good landings all. Yes, Tinker it is. Glad it brought back some memories too. I had one like that back in the 70s but sadly lost it somewhere along the way. But great knives for the buck and will do so much for one package. Thanks, like hearing about peoples history with a particular piece.
