Charlie you aren't insinuating that his new wife might have given him the idea for Battle Axe Cutlery Co. are you?

I put this one on here because it is an old rare brand and because I think I just sold it if the AAPK member likes it. It's a Conn. Cutlery Naugatuck boys knife with some ind of etch on the blade that I can't make out. ___Dave

That is a beautiful set of pruning blades Mike. Not to likely that there are many more sets like that around ::nod::

Lee, lovely score on that Conn Cutlery from Dave. It is for sure a rare find. I wonder about the etching and would be curious to see if you can make any parts of it out? Cheers,

Some mighty fine examples shown throughout this thread.
Here is an oldie with an uncommon tang stamp which reads, "Car-Van S. P. Co. Canton O.", and also a light "CAR-VAN" blade etch.
The "Canton Cutlery Co." was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1891. They were a cutlery company which primarily manufactured picture handled knives in celluloid similar to the "Novelty" and "Golden Rule" companies. Around 1920, Canton Cut. Co. started offering other handle materials such as stag (pic-bone) and Liberty Silver. In 1927, they officially changed their name to "Car-Van S. P. Co." of Canton Ohio. "Car-Van" was the name of the special steel that Canton had developed for their blades. The company stopped producing knives prior to WWII. Enclosed is a whittler model and an ad from 1923.

Found this 2 1/2" closed (62mm). Wharncliffe whittler. All 3 blades are stamped G crown R CONGREVE PATENT. It has carved Tortoise shell handles and scalloped liners. It's very fragile, with a couple of cracks in the deeper carved grooves of the shell. Levine's book dates this 1829 - 1843. I'm wondering about the word Patent in the stamping?

Bird & Co. Ltd. (Top line) R (Middle line) and Sheffield (bottom line). Sorry about the crappy picture. Has anyone heard of this stamp? It has 201063 stamped along the spike. The scales are pressed horn. The back side is nice but the front scale is a little lacking. I can't find this in Levines or Goins books or the Sheffield book.

Nice find Harold. Those old junk store and flea market finds are the best! ::tu:: Goins says Tenk Hardware Co., Quincy Ill. was largest wholesale hardware business in the area, sold "Tenk's Clipper Brand" pocket knives 1891-1925. Many were made by Ulster and Utica. Company was founded by Henry Tenk Jr. and his brother Herman in 1865 and was in business until 1967.
