Willie, Those are 2 nice bottles, but she does need to clean the flask. The case gin is cool, but it is a common bottle even with a partial label. (Don't clean that one though.)

She said she'd clean it. AS of a while ago, she hadn't gotten around to it. LOL

I was thinkin how different the bottle collectors are versus knife collectors.

Doesn't seem to be much argument against cleaning up old bottles.

Yeah willie, there really is. It's an ongoing debate just like knives. Spend some time over there and you can find a whole bunch of people who don't believe in doing anything to a bottle except maybe washing the dirt off. However, most of the higher end bottles that are attic mint sell for more than the ones that aren't. That's just a fact. And you can clean a bottle without polishing it to pieces just like a knife. All boils down to the collectors..... just like knives. Same song, second verse. Kelley

Can't really call them knives . No snap, blades are just flat steel .
Does anybody have an explanation as to WHY anybody would BUY this sort of "stuff" ???

For drilling oil?

Looks like an old Huges company rock drill bit. The fact that it has a pipe thread on it would lend credence to the oil drilling theory.

Oil, water, gas, or a hole in rock like IH said.

That thread is typical for drilling stuff, makes it come loose easier for swapping out bits, collars (extra heavy drill stem to add weight and make it drill better as most drilling rigs can't put much down pressure on the bit so they rely on the weight of the collars and stem above the bit and hold the weight off with the draw works), or stem.

They are lubricated from the center with drilling mud which is forced downhole from a pump and then flows back up the hole to a pit where the cuttings settle out and the fluid can be recycled, or left to dry and buried. ( which is frowned upon these days )

Some rigs run compressed air to keep the bit clean and cool but they don't usually drill very deep and the bits are designed a bit differently.

Miss Karen decided ( grudgingly ) to clean up her flask.
It looks damn good now!

I think that style of bit was invented and marketed by Hughes Tool Co. and is what initially put them on the map.
It is part of what made Howard Hughes a billionaire.

I saw a board of several of them up for auction with a guide price of a few hundred dollars but I forgot to keep track of what it went for. Who knows, I can't imagine that there are that many rock drills in good condition left from the 1930's. Throw it on e-bay or that guy ( I can't remember his name but I think he's somewhere in the northern US) who does big tool auctions every year and see what happens.

I sold my comic book collection last week and was going to go buy a load of pocket knives but I stumbled across a couple of items on evil-bay and just couldn't help myself. Another nice grindstone and a nice treadle powered gap bed wood lathe. I may have some kind of disorder. The wife wanted to know what I was thinking. at any rate my newest toys.

now take that little bicycle and attach it to the stone...put that child to work.

nice finds...glad i dont have to move that stone.

Sandstone is surprisingly light when compared to granite and marble. I can pick just the stone up without too much trouble and it's 24" x4".

It rolls pretty well once I get the hand truck under it.
