Ivoryman wrote: Sat Jul 18, 2020 1:04 am Don't know what you paid or what they are worth, but QTCut5 better known as Q, has traded these to some local pig hunters/fisherman in Hawaii. I hope he will chime in. I think the hunters love them for hunting and I think for corrosion resistance in moist even salt water environs. Looks like a stout, tough, all around hunter butcher knife that folds up.
Good memory, Ivoryman. Although it's been a few years since I had any Gerber Gators, the local hunters and fishermen here still ask me if I have any more to trade every time they see me...they really liked that knife, especially the drop point fine edge model which was perfect for skinning the wild boars and scraping the hides. The Gator's fat, textured, soft rubbery handle provided excellent purchase even when covered with blood and slime. For a period of time there I was trading 3 or 4 Gators per week for all kinds of fresh produce such as: bananas, papayas, mangoes, pineapple, avocados, figs, macadamia nuts, lilikoi, lychee, poi, tomatoes, sweet potatoes as well as locally grown & roasted Kona coffee, grass fed beef, pork and of course whatever catch-of-the-day the fishermen showed up with. Some hunters even wanted to trade wild goat meat (which I tried...once...but just couldn't stomach--very tough with a strong "gamey" taste). The best deal I ever made was two Gerber Gators in exchange for 10 lbs of fresh sashimi-grade ahi tuna (which sells in the local fish market for about $25/lb).

Thanks for all the compliments. No doubt about it. Looooooove this knife. Steel is so cool, easy sharpen and holds it. That was more the bevel angle it came with but sticking with it. Much used knife when I got it. And a good long clip with plenty of flat and a needle point. And the snap is fab, the action so smooth. And the bones rock. Feel like Jeffin transformed it into a one of a kind beautiful knife and the three blades do almost everything except spreading and spooning like a nice fat spear will do. The knife will not do that. But I cut my veggies and fruits with it and pretty much everything else I' cut. And if I'm not in a place where there's plumbing to wash I like to lick the wet blade dripping with fruit juice before I wipe it off and dry it. I prefer to leave it with saliva residue over fruit or veggie residue and try not to fold it up or leave it wet. Fruit juice and carrot juice off carbon steel. Mmmmnnn.

I ended up with one of those Gerbers, some how, ::shrug:: and found it to be very comfortable in the hand. I've not used it but wouldn't hesitate to use it during deer season.

Thanks for the input gentlemen! I am glad to see there are others out there that still find these 'Ol Gerbers useful. I think they are great "users" and I am pretty hard on my working knives. I am more careful now with some of my other carry knives like my Queen Large Stockman since it can't be replaced like it could when they were still in 'bidness.

Which is why they're good to buy used. They don't cost a whole lot. I guess--rubber/plastic handles, 420HC steel, modern design--not really interesting to collectors. I have had the EZ OUT, got a damaged one with another knife, even took the time to send it off to Gerber to be replaced thinking I'd use it, and I never carried it. Gave it away. Now that I'm back into lightweight folders, kinda wishing I didn't give it away. Guess I'll need to get another. The Skeleton version I had looked ugly, but cut like the dickens, and the cutout in the blade did save a little weight.

The Gator is a heavy duty workhorse. Need to get one myself. I recently bought a knockoff to get free shipping on some hardware I needed, and I was NOT impressed. Thing had rubber that gave me itching (I'm mildly allergic to latex) and the steel wasn't good, despite being said as 8Cr13MOV. The 154CM version looks extra nice, as does the S30V, and even basic versions. Thinking I'll go serrated, with the work I do, it makes heavy cutting quicker.

Made it 2 full weeks. ::ds::

Last but not least (more like 3rd favorite), Smooth Rose (SR prefix). The little SR62027 jack punches way above its weight class and looks very elegant doing it. I also have a mess of SR6220 peanuts.

Thank you and yes it is a big heavy knife. Needs to be in a sheath on the belt. Back pocket works good for now. :)
