There are just all kinds of variations of these knives. I don't think I've seen the combination of the last stamp with the half'n'half blade. And in such good condition. Nice catch mate.

Jerry did you notice it has the wrapping and bar code from the factory.These knives could have been made in the factory just before they closed.

I think that was one shortly before Camillus closed, which probably accounts for the swap in the two secondary blades and the wider coping blade, (it appears wider to me in that pic).
They were probably pushing to get knives out the door.

It could also be that SMKW or Blue Ridge bought some of the partially finished knives and had them finished later. The plastic bag with bar code and the SKU code of CMSM72 looks like ones used by SMKW & Blue Ridge.
I suspect they have had their hands on it at some point, whether they made it from parts or not I am not sure, but anything is possible with those folks.

Received a Olsen and a Camillus 5 in the mail today

..jerry, i have looked at mine with a magnifier(i'm guessing 10x)(minus 76 yr. old eyeballs) and i can't see any laminations on the edges. if you've got one more powerful, look at yours and see if you can see any on the edges........... ................

You can see the lamination on my Camillus 5 my magnifier is X 50.

Tommy, you don't need magnification to see the laminations on mine. (By the way, thank you very much for the knife.)

The #5 as listed in the 2003 Camillus Catalog. Note the handle description.

Who ever told you rosewood may have, because they're both red, had them confused with the 1999 Rosewood collection which was all kitchen knives or the 2002 Western OVB WW81 & WW85 which were fixed blades with "Resin Impregnated (stabilized) Rosewood" handles.

Grant -- Nice catch. It's hard to find Imperial Scouts with handles in that condition. What ever they used as handles for those knives, shrinks awfully bad.



Colonel -- You must have a shamrock in your pocket to find a factory fresh, still in the box, one like that. And free to boot.

Here is a bit of Camillus Factory trivia for all the enthusiasts of the Camillus whittler.

This is from an email that Tom Williams sent me-

"One time a woodcarver sent a box of Camillus knives back to the factory to have them repaired. Most of them were the model #72 Whittler's pattern. We installed new blades and cleaned them up. I sent them back to the customer and I received an interesting "Thank you" letter from him. I did not originally know who the customer was except by his name which was Foy Brown. I later learned that he made the Charley MacCarthy and Mortimer Snerd ventroliquist dummies. With the letter, Mr. Brown sent a beautiful bird house that he carved and painted. I gave it to my mother and she still has it. I met some interesting people while I worked at Camillus."

I thought a little history might be in order because many of our members are probably not old enough to remember Edgar Bergen and his puppets, Charlie & Mortimer.

Charlie McCarthy was a ventriloquist dummy operated by Edgar Bergen. Mortimer Snerd was Charlie McCarthy's sidekick, also operated by Edgar Bergen. There were most famous on the radio and didn't really make the transition into television. Edgar Berger also wrote a cartoon called Mortimer and Charlie, about the adventures of Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd.

Charlie McCarthy really was a big deal in the 1930s and 1940s. I can recall as a child in the 1950s seeing them in guest spots on television. Edgar Bergen died in 1978. I can recall my mother talking about listening to Charlie McCarthy on the radio when she was a kid. She said that Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy came to her grade school in Southern California. She also said Edgar Bergen was a really nice guy.


Foy Brown was a vaudeville performer with his brother in a troupe called the Foy Brothers. They performed magic, juggling, mind reading, ventriloquism and acting. Foy used Figures made by Revello Pettee as his mainstay but, he himself was a prolific builder of figures from the 1940's through to the 1970's.

Received these 72 in the mail . 22LR6, Camillus 80 well used (only shows 8 on tang ) and a scout.The scout has only one pin in handle and early tang stamp.
