I am glad to read that you have recovered some of your stuff. It sounds as if the thief had some idea of the relative value of the knives, if you found the less valuable ones and not the more valuable ones. Good luck finding the remainder.

Mine are accessible ... probably too accessible. But I figure they will go for my guitars before my knives ... hopfully

Really sorry to hear about this.

If I were you, I would visit the local pawn shops (if there are any). The thief might be pawning the more expensive knives.

One really needs to be proactive in such situations (as you have been). Your experience clearly shows that you can't wait for the police to do anything. That's not a knock against the police, they have their own scale of priorities, and unfortunately property theft isn't high on their list.

If you do visit any pawn shops, and if you do find any of your knives there, don't let on to the pawn shop owner/employees that they have your stolen property, as that property might disappear before the cops get there, never to be seen again. Instead, my advice is to pretend to be an interested buyer, and take pictures of your knives in the display case or on their counter, saying that you want to research them more online. Then go outside and call the cops. Having pictures will prove to the cops that your knives are/were there.

Thanks! I have already made the rounds to a number of pawn shops and alerted several that I frequent a lot and trust/have a relationship with about what I had lost. I do think that some of the shops would make that stuff disappear before the cops get there, .....

Still hoping more of your property gets found and returned GSP. Something like this will make you want to invest in some claymores and a spool of trip wire. I've only been robbed once when I was in the military. I had just been assigned to a new post and on the first night I was there someone broke into my locker in the barracks while I was at the mess hall and stole my watch, money & wallet , two pocket knives, and my Ka-Bar (given to me by my father). Basically everything I owned at the time. The sense of betrayal is as fresh today as it was 40 some years ago. Especially when you know it was someone you are serving with, someone who is supposed to have your back. Never did get back any of my stuff except for the wallet (empty of money) which was found in a trash can by the post theater. I hope you can find some peace with this, my thoughts are with you.

Thanks Sas, I had a footlocker and duffle bag when overseas as a contractor waiting to leave a FOB and head to a different FOB and my entire possessions got "Romeo Foxtrot'ed" by a bunch of the other guys staying in the transient barracks. I had to go get the MPs to get most of my stuff back. The excuse from the guys that took my stuff was that some had told them I had already shipped out.

This experience is about 20x worse....

Before I got into knife collecting and didn't have much of anything people would waste time stealing, I had a 100% fool proof security system. I had three dogs that had removed any value most anything I owned, and what was left wasn't worth wading through three dogs including a German shepherd, a protective Australian shepherd and a small deaf but very protective terrier cross. Now with two overly friendly dogs, although the Belgian has potential to get protective, I keep most of the stuff I seriously want to protect in several safes. I do display stuff I enjoy seeing out and would hate to loose them, but not enough to put into hiding. I collect stuff I want to enjoy owning and messing with as apposed to just buying stuff because of it's value to potential thieves. A lot of my knives are very well used and have rich histories, but lack much collector value. I suppose I'd see things differently if it all disappeared to thieves some day. My guns are securely locked away with custom knives and any old knives that still have value, and Gypsy is on constant duty along with back-up Molly.____Dave

I've been fortunate to live in an area / neighborhood where there is very little crime. However, there are some townhouses where people don't play nice. For almost ten years now, I've had the below sticker on my front and back storm doors. I've had some 'questionable' people knock on my door and I know they've seen the sticker. I believe it has acted as a subtle message to deter those wanna-be's. But then, if some homeless dude, or anyone else, wants in bad enough, the sticker might not deter them at all. They just better hope I or my wife are not home when they do. Oh, and the sticker deters solicitors, even though I have a sign posted "ABSOLUTELY NO SOLICITORS". Some of them can't read.

Mine are all in display cabimets. I love to be able to see them daily. If I had to hide em all, Id just sell em all. Yeh, I think what could happen but? I used to have 35 Ruger single actions on display in the den and I thought of what coould happen but there agai, why have all buried away? Id hate awful bad to lose them but I always did live on the edge. Now Im just gonna sit back, sip a bourbon and look at my little gems!

My customs and really old stuff is buried in several safes and half the time I can't remember the combinations but one of my kids have a list in case I forget.____Dave

Been out of pocket traveling so just now reading this. Sorry to hear you have lost so much of your prized collection. Display and enjoy or hide and lock up is a tricky and personal equation. Lots of variables and I don’t think there is a good answer and certainly not one size that fits all.

Hope you can still recover some more of what was stolen by those that don’t understand how to honestly earn what they get in life.
