i myself use Hoppe's gun oil or BreakFree oil, not sure why this happened but i got a bottle of Latama oil (quick release) used it on all my automatic knives and worked great and thought cool no more problems with them knives well few months go by i get some of the knives back out and none will work anymore , the quick relese had gummed up and was really causing lots problems with every knife i used it on as none of them would open fully anymore , i had to completely remove the Quick release oil then re-oil them with Hoppes. not sure why the oil gummed up on every knife i had im thinking its where i live or basicly my location , quick release was made by my good friend Tank (Mike Fisher) and was made in Texas where its hot all the time , for some reason it did not work well on my knives i used it on . possible it works great in hotter climates and not so good in cooler climates ? hey hope this helps in your search man

tends to stiffen after a few months. I wonder if it is
because there still is some residue in the joints ( I
don’t completely take the knife apart).

Wow, I’ve only heard the praises of QR oil, never any negatives. Good to know

Myself, I've never been disappointed by 3-In-One. I suggest, however, that if you're maybe going to use your knife on food, download the material safety data sheet for your chosen product. In the case of 3-In-One, the MSDS says that the oral toxicity is essentially negligible. You don't want to drink the stuff, but the amount that will transfer from a clean, well-wiped blade isn't going to poison anyone.

Bob, have found the same thing regarding Quick release. With my 100 plus year old Camillus to the Kershaw Leeks that I EDC , the QR oil gets stiff and gummy. So went back to 3 in 1 oil about a year ago. Maybe it’s great stuff in Texas , as has been posted, but up here in Wi. I won’t use it again .

Thanks for sharing this. Switched back to 3 in 1 awhile ago and very happy with results.

I assume that is probably the case with most lubricants. Accidentally ingesting such a tiny amount isn’t likely to cause any real damage. But then, I have a cast iron stomach.

I would be more concerned about the awful taste than anything else.

I've been using 3-in-one for over 20 years. It works, but I don't like the smell.

Machine oil is good as a protectant, but you don't want to slice and eat an apple with that on the blades!
Mineral oil can work well as a blade protectant, but it evaporates quickly and must be re-applied more often.
You may also try a wax paste, like Mother's Mag polish, or even a carnuba was for cars.

There are many choices. Try a few, and find what works best for you, in the way that you use your knife!

Rev, have you ever tried using compressor oil? I have a fair quantity of it, recycled from dismantled compressors and I have just started using it on a couple of folding knives, it is pretty light but so far so good. I have not tried on any of my autos.

I don't know personally ... yet, but I have that it is a very high-quality oil overall.

I tried that years ago, been using it ever since. As you say, light and does not gum up. You're onto something.
