Some of the most creative (and obvious) lies and “tall tales” I’ve seen or heard were attempts to sell a knife. Of course, they don’t compete with the lies told by politicians.
Ken
Amen!
Perhaps "trying to impress the girls" also makes the list of tall tells. Or maybe that was just me as a youth.
Have a couple Kabars, like ‘em well enough, but don’t know diddly squat about their history.
However, being raised up in AK I learned a thing or two about brown bears. I’m very skeptical that anybody could kill one by stabbing it in the skull.
First of all, they’re brutally strong. Even the small ones are, and one swipe can easily break human bones, or make the human unable to even pull and use their knife. If they got ahold of you in a “bear hug”, it would crush your rib cage and detract from your stabbing power.
Secondly, in order to stab at the skull you’d have to lift up your hand/arm, whereupon the bear’s next swipe would disembowel you.
But the real problem is, the frontal plate of a bear’s skull is over an inch thick of solid bone. Occasionally you hear somebody say, if a bear charges me, I’ll shoot him right between the eyes.” Don’t do that, it’s spectacularly ineffective. All it does is peel a strip of his scalp and pisses him off.
The hunting guides there say your best chance is to aim for the near shoulder and try to turn him, so you can get your next shot in his vitals from the side. Even then it’s no sure thing because bears don’t die right away. He’s often going to come on and maim or kill you, and die a few hours later.
I wasn’t there, didn’t see it, but a guy who claimed to kill a brown bear with a knife was telling a pretty tall tale.
Wellsir, ol’ Davy was uncommon smart as a youngster. He laid real still and played possum till the bear came up to sniff him, then quick as a wink he whipped off his diaper and tied a bullspud hitch around its jaws and nostrils. Why that poor bear fell over and suffercated hisself on the spot (whether from lack of oxygen or aroma from the diaper is a bit unclear to this day.)
In any case, the bear was only 3, so not much past a cub. An older, bigger bear wouldn’t have fallen for that trick. Although I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the Kabar guy produced some aroma of his own…

Thanks, Gene and Steve for turning on the light. Hint: These folks have studied the KABar and CASE companies for years and they are the experts.
In that case .....see what I did there Would they have an idea on the current value of a 2012 Carbon Fibre Stockman 10318 mint in box ??

Thanks for posting the bear info, I was going to bring that up too. Even the smaller black bear has a half inch thick skull at the front, nobody's gonna stab a knife through that either. Just more facts that put the lie to the "Official KA-BAR" story.
I read a book "Bear," by Clyde Ormond back in the 1960s. In it was a photograph of black bear (I think) skulls with a skid mark on the forehead from having been shot with a rifle. The bears were later killed, obviously, but not with that shot.

I'm a Ka-bar expert because I have all these...just kidding but love the brand!
IMHO, I'd say anyone with that many of any one brand is pretty much an expert in my book, KK. What model is the knife at the very bottom, dead-center, black covers? I've been seeing them online but with very little info attached, and since I like them I'd like to know more. I particularly like the odd shaped bolsters. Thx!
Thanks for the link but I can’t get it on my phone as eBay Uk is too clever to let me see it
On the laptop it’s not so clever
Uk madness
So 80 bucks then

Members with an interest in brown bears should Google up “Keith Rogan bear mauling”. He was moose hunting if I recall, and a sow busted him up pretty bad. But he’s a tough old boy, and pulled through to author a book about his experience and other incidents.
