I voted “numbers don’t matter.” Intent is the biggest factor but there is also perception. I’ve seen collections & I know I don’t have one, but friends see some of my knives & they think I do.

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
I voted 20+. I only vote that way because of knowledge I've gained here between a collector and an accumulator. If you call one the other it seems to be offensive. Others can correct me if I've misinterpreted the definition here.
accumulator- obtaining a knife that you like.
collector- obtaining a knife because of its history.
I only collect Remington knives and its because of the company's history and quality.

When part of your day is spent looking or thinking about your knives I think you have a collection.

I guess one. My son sent me a knife in January of 2007 for my birthday and it turned into a collection. I don't think it would have happened otherwise so I really believe in what I am saying. I planted an acorn in 2010 and it turned into a tree that may produce tens of thousands of acorns in its long life to be.

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
I don't know if this correct for this thread. As I stated before in this form .I am an accumulator not a collector. A lot of my knives are lock backs that I used for work on hunting. Some I have picked up the last couple of years since I joined AAPK Like the schrade LB-5 shown with 5ot blades I installed. I have a few more packed away in boxes. Once we move from our barn into our new house I will unpack the rest. Just wanted to share my accumulation of med small lock backs.

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
Since the term "collect" seems to have a different meaning to each individual, this is what Google turned up..........
It looks to me like the definition depends on who you are and what your perspective is.
col·lect
/kəˈlek(t)/
1.bring or gather together (things, typically when scattered or widespread).
"he went around the office collecting old coffee cups"
Similar: gather, accumulate, assemble, amass, stockpile, pile up, heap up, scrape together, store (up), hoard

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
Funny, I looked up “collection,” and it said, “any group of objects accumulated in one location.” So I looked up the meaning of “group,” and it defined it as a “collection”
(usually people, of course). But, see, even Webster refuses to put a number on it.

A friend once said to me, "Does dust "collect" on the dining room table or does it "accumulate"?

Seems to me that once someone decides to collect such and such, then as soon as they get their first piece the collection has started. Or something.

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
I think when you have 3 or more knives in the same spot (case, drawer, box etc.) you now have a collection. If they are one here, one at work, one in the car, etc. it’s more like you own some knives. I keep a couple of knives in the garage for use. I don’t consider those part of my collection.

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
It is pretty funny now that you mention it, though I had never thought of it that way.
I understand that it is technically a collection either way, but we commonly think that most "collectors" try to gather certain models, handle materials, and/or styles. You can often see a theme in the way they keep or display them.
"Accumulators" like me just get what they like, and do not necessarily group them in any specific way.
There really is no difference, unless it is in "focus" or in organization.

Re: How Many Does It Take To Make A Collection
When I started collecting, I considered a trio to be a suitable starting collection size. So that's why I chose 3. Wish I had 3 trench knives . . .
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

I agree with Reverand. I buy what catches my eye. No real theme to my accumulating if someone on AAPK has a good looking knife and I like it I will buy one just like it. I don’t care about a pattern or make.

Combine the china flu with fleabay, no wife, no kids, no mortgage and no car payment and the original count of 3200 being low, the total is probably closer to 4500 now. Good steel has the potential to be a valuable trading commodity in potential SHTF scenarios.
My annual primary expenditures are property taxes, any food I don't get through hunting, fishing and gardening, ammo and knives.
