Good to hear from ya Will. Hope all is well. Still a little early but the selling season starts soon, did my vending inside last year. Gonna get me one of those shelter tents and try it outside this year. Have arranged for a space on the lee side of the riverfront mall I was in last year. Two blocks from the city market and 15 feet from the trolley tracks. Love them tourista's

I have been looking at a few different makers, Chinese and American. (Schrade/Smith & Wesson/Taylor and Kabar's Becker line). I have been considering a 1095 CroVan (or just 1095 Carbon Steel). A 5.5" blade that is a minimum of .20" (1/5 inch) for blade thickness seems appropriate for serious work while walking bout the nearby woods. I have a Kabar USN Mark 1 Deck Knife but want to look into something that can take a bit more vigorous use/abuse than my beloved skinning tool.

Any suggestions?

I'm probably too late for this thread but I was thinking an older Jet Pilot Survival Knife (JPSK) will do just fine for your needs. Preferably from the 1980s or older. An Ontario or Camillus made. It doesn't matter. The specifications are the same as they were made for the military. It's tough and built to last. Has a saw like spine and can be put into the sheath right-sided or left. The blade length is usually 5 inches (3/16th thick) but I believe you can find some with 6" blades, both in 1095 steel usually coated with army green. I bought one in great shape for $30 shipped. The sheath is a bit beat up.

My old machete is my choice for clearing brush while walking through the woods. But if you want something that can serve as a chopper and a knife this Condor kukri is ideal for both at just under $70 shipped. The blade is shorter but thicker than the true kukri at 10" long and 21/64" thick or about 5/16" and heavy at 1.84 lbs. It is nicknamed "The Beast". The 1075 steel is easier to sharpen and has a convex edge for better chopping ability. The most narrow area at the base of the blade is used for smaller tasks. It's been proven to work as a "bushcraft" knife by the winner in a reality show "Alone" season one. This model as his bushcraft knife of choice.
