Oiling stag handles

I actually leave it on awhile then wipe. I don’t soak the whole knife though. Then renaissance wax all of it.

Soaking the entire knife would only be in an extreme case.

I'm quite sure it won't harm the knife to soak the whole knife.

I use mineral oil on jigged bone and stag scales. Just a little dab'll do ya. I use Ren Wax on fiber scales, like old SAKs and the like.

OL'Ben left me this Mables at 100 yrs old the stag keeps it moisture being soaked in mineral oil once a year,and I DO use her during deer season.

On knives I don’t use often I use mineral oil , on my camp knife I haven’t oiled it in 4yrs as I use it a lot and natural oils from my skin goes in it

As someone who repairs knives professionally, I will tell you that mineral oil can soften and discolor stag. It won't hurt to get a little on the handles, if you wipe it off-but soaking stag and bone in mineral oil will ruin it.
Use paste wax instead.

Is there and truth in what I have heard about treating knifes with celluloid handles once a year will stop them from gassing? I only have a couple stag handle knifes and I used a dab of Remington gun oil on them .Didn’t see any ill effects from using gun oil .

I know of no “cure” that will stop celluloid from outgassing. I’ve seen numerous posts stating to keep petroleum products off of celluloid, but I have no first-hand experience with that.

The only celluloids I’ve had go bad were in an enclosed display - they all went off, and took the other knives in the display case with them. (I’m assuming one knife probably triggered them all). Since then I’ve kept celluloids on display on open shelves, where they get air, and separated from each other and other metal objects. No problems since then, but everything I’ve just said is anecdotal. YMMV

“A little dab’l do ya.” Like anything else, follow the manufacturer’s directions. I’ve had the same small jar for several years and there’s still probably half of it left. But I only use it on handle covers, not metal. Many folks use it on metal also though. https://restorationproduct.com/about/

Perfect Amount. Rule of thumb - Less Is Best.
