You may live to regret that offer on the Crown.. LT and I both like it.. His bar is adorned with all kinds of Crown artifacts and just a few contain any remains of the original...
I have enjoyed my visits with him each and every time.
I have learned much from each visit but seem to lose a few brain cells each time causing a need to return to find them... again and again...

Like the fellow who has stared in the window of a posh restaurant for years who finally gets to go in and orders the most expensive thing on the menu ( usually lobster ) . Then when it arrives on his plate and he looks at it he realizes that he must figure out how to eat it. Although in this case it is really not that bad.
I have run many scenarios through my mind ( I have certainly had plenty of time to do so ) and in fact was in contact with several municipalitys yesterday. There are numerous factors which before were hypothetical and now ( if the govenor does indeed sign it ) need to be addressed . Upon his signing the bill, the law takes effect in 180 days. That gives me some time also it would be around the first of the year so considering our weather really the earliest is next spring.
I suppose the biggest problem is my being alone it is tough to do everything by yourself which will even after starting up, will mean staffing , funding , ect. There are plans toward solving some of that. It will not be easy and as I have said as soon as it is official the real work begins. I have got some positive things on my side. So who knows I am 61 in July perhapes just perhapes. In my corner I bring some acumen and credibility on the subject ( as much as anyone I would hope ) having a book out and having been an antiquarian for Schrade should give me some points regarding knowledge of the subject, second I believe my sincerity is evident in having forced an opinion from the NYS attorney general ( also having written that request not a mean accomplishment since the Attorney general is not required to respond to such a request unless tendered by a municipality or agency of the state ) I wrote it when the municipality of Walden was persuing a museum which was twarted by nothing being in place to allow the display of automatics hense the bill. There inability to give an acceptable answer lead to the bill and hopefully law itself. Which I also helped write. All this takes a while I think I was 7 years old when I started this ( just kidding ) . What is the quote the wheels of justice grind slowly but they grind incredibly small. Well slow is an understatment. Of course knowledge and good intent while laudable are secondary to what I feel is my major asset. You see I have the goods . While I am sure there are artifacts and items others may have, which would increase and help the stature of such a venture ( museum ) I firmly believe that with out my stuff as the necleus for a revolving ( changing ) permanent display regarding Schrade and the hudson valley history that segment would be impossible. The fact that I own the hundreds of automatics shown in my book making it the most well known and documented collection of these items in the world should also help give me some value in this venture. That is what I bring to the table.
What will be needed will be a suitable location, A viable base ( ie non profit organization which will adhere to all legal aspects ). Funding alternatives but mostly assistance in staffing ect. I am and have been aware of all this and am trying to put these things in place. I have several options regarding these factors from small facilitys to large. Will it work? I do not know. I will keep plugging alone.
I once knew a veteran who had been through many horrors in WWII . He was always pleasant but quiet and stoic. He had seen a lot, one day I asked him ( in the VFW after a few libations ) how he had managed to survive it all and maintain his attitude. His answer was the ANT on 42 street philosophy. I was as confused as I am sure you ( the reader is as to what he meant ) . He went on to explain the story of an ANT who had to cross 42 st in NYC . 42 St is one of the busiest streets in the world there is no logical reason why a smart ANT should attempt to cross it because the odds were completely against making it to the other side, however for what ever reason ( be it love, insanity, religion, country, or simply fate which had made it necessary ) he had to try to get to the other side. Then he stopped in his story and had a drink . I of course asked did the ANT make it? He said who cares, he said the point of the story is sooner or later some ANT will make it most won't but there is always the possibility that the ANT will make it because just like man another and another will eventually tackle the odds again simply because fate, belief, love, destiny or a myriad of other reasons has put them in that positon. Like he said in the end for those that don't who cares it is just another ANT. However someone will, in his case it had been living through horrors which most would have never survived. Perhapes his destiny was to sit and explain this philosophy to another drunk (me) in the VFW so that I could remember it while persueing my modest dream of preserving a bit of American history and changing a small inequity in the law to allow that. Perhapes all this was simply so that I could pass the words that sustained him on to you . I do not know. I only know that this ANT is still on the march . Whoops got to go here comes another car (ie problem to surmount) . LT PS As usual Larry my record is in tact I still it seems cannot answer a simple question in a few words. It would be great if you could get space in the old Schrade/current Canal Street building. 1st floor for us old farts wanting to visit but not wanting to climb stairs... Lots of parking there. And think of the history just upstairs.. Dave, Wally etc..
The plant would also be a great location but who owns it now?
Probably find a few old Schraders (retired) that would love to help out for a while?

Today AUG 16 2007 I received notification that the governor has indeed signed this bill into law. It takes effect in 180 days however it is now the law of the land. For me it is the culmination of many years of almost impossible odds and many frustrations. Even now it is hard to believe that it is a reality.
This law will make it possible for the display and several other aspects of the study of this important part of AMERICAN, NY and Hudson Valley cutlery history. This is the first change to the archaic NY switchblade laws since there inception in the 1950 tys. In effect it establishes a legal procedure for various aspects of this study and finally eliminates the enforcment of any laws regarding them, upon whim interpretation of any enforcment agency.
For anyone who would have an interest Larrys site has some of the articles which I wrote explaining a lot of what has transpired to get this far. From tricking the Attorney Generals office into finally issuing an opinion (nebulous though it was ) which finally forced a bill ( which I also assisted in writng) . Years of run around emails with various state officials Then years in the legislature where it was a political ping pong ball .
All this to change a small inequity and to allow this history and the people who created it to be remembered. Actually the main reason I wrote my book The collectors guide to switchblade knives and my CD The Langston Collection ( a virtual museum tour ). ) was to this end.
As one individual who decided to change a law without a lot of support from a large organization I would suggest having a lot of time it has taken me 7 years. Still it does show that if an individual is right and is a big enough pain in the butt anything is possible. The tough part is living long enough to get it done. In my case the journey has now just begun still it is a first step and that is how all jouneys begin.
To me today is not only a pleasant victory it is also a relief since saying you will do something and then doing it are two different things. While I knew that I had done all I could, until it is fact it is only hot air and whimsy. While many have wished me well there have been those who have detracted and demeaned suggesting my actions as futile or for a personal agenda. There are always those who do nothing to help and are the first to criticise. As those of you who know me are aware my name and reputation are really all ( on a personal level) that I care about so again seeing this finalized is quite gratifying .
I want to thank all of you who though emails and opinions have supported my efforts regarding this law. Now as things mature hopefully there will be some aspects to what all this actually means that will start to come to light. Only time will tell sure hope i have enough left to git R done.
