Although I have many Pen knives this has to be my favorite.
A nearly 100 year old Shumate pen knife. There is just something about this knife that does it for me.

thanks mate, ive been carrying the RR peanut today and im liking carying a smaller knife, although im still scared ill lose it lol, so im also intererested in finding some small penknives for my collection,

Notwithstanding the generally accepted 3" limit for traditional penknives, I saw this "Pen Knife" in Sanders' store at 3 1/4" with "composition" handles which I suppose is celluloid.

I've also seen that exact pattern described as an "office knife", not a penknife, although when I google "Office Knife" I am shown a series of fixed blade kitchen paring knives. And yet the two blade pattern pictured even has the words "office knife" printed on some scales.
What is the history of Office Knives? Is the pattern usually 3 1/4" closed umlike the smaller penknife, and do they all have celluloid scales?

It is a pen and the Office Knife is also a pen knife. In the case of this Eye Brand this is the same frame that the traditional office knife is made on. Some office knives are 3¾ inches long. IMHO an office knife needs to have the usual scroll work and 'OFFICE KNIFE' imprinted on the mark side. No real rule in this matter, just my opinion.
Early on, an office knife was used for general office work, including ink erasure.
Also, I doubt that is really celluloid, I would be inclined to call it composition.

I recently purchased this old sleaveboard penknife Kayser, my first with this mark I believe. I was dumbfounded no one else bid on this gem, mine for a tenspot. Upon inspection I decided it would finally be used. It arrived in unused condition with a few pepper spots and a chip in the bone on the pile side edge that I think was there since the pin was struck in Solingen many decades ago.

I primarily collect Great Eastern. Length is a little over 3 1/2", very nice size for me.

The jigging on Charlie's navy knife and 2017 48 Diamond jack are their best to date. The jigging on this is of similar quality, just pared down to penknife dimensions. One thing I like about German hafting is the lack of machining to the handles at the bolster, they basically cut the bone to size, fit it and they're done. The pocket will smooth it out over time. This one is a little thicker at the pen blade end than the master end. If this was intentional its a nice touch as the wider feel allows for a little more control with the pen. Blades are crinked with a catchbit at the pen end and everything fits very tightly in the well with only the slightest bit of rub to speak of.

I'm interested to see how the bone ages on this one so plan to carry for a while. Amazing no one but me wanted it, I wonder if its lack of shield and little bone chip drove the non-existent but for me interest.

I've gotten away from pen knives ... my last remaining example is a Camillus that gets the call when I have to wear a suit from time to time ... it has lapis lazuli stone on both sides (doing both sides is extraordinarily rare for Santa Fe Stoneworks modded Camillus knives - they almost always only do one side - their presumption must be that they will end up in a display case and not carried - that doesn't sit well with me, thus this is the only one I have)
